It seems to me like it would be a fun, and productive thing to do. If there are enough people who want to do this, I can set something up.
I was thinking I (or someone else) would supply a backing track over which everyone could record their guitars.
We could make it an open poll kind of thing, where everyone sends me their clips and I put them up with their names, and put up a poll where you can vote.
We could also make the clip makers anonymous; as in we don't know in advance who made which clip...might give a more fair rating of the actual tone. I would just label the clips A to whatever, and we vote like that. After a certain amount of time, I'd announce which clip, and which user had the best guitar tone as voted by the sneap forums. I think this would give the most unbiased tone ratings (no woah it was made by "enter god name" so it must be the best).
When the competition is over, we could discuss the tones and how they were made so there would also be an educational aspect to it. It would be cool if a lot of people entered, so we get a broad range of sounds and experience in here. It wouldn't really be about winning, but more about checking out other people their tones, and discussing how they were achieved.
Like the idea? Let me know! If we get a bunch of people interested I'll start looking for an appropriate backing track, etc.
