How did Opeth come to be singed to RR?

Aside from being physically signed by an RR rep, how did the deal come about? Were they still on MFN at the time, or were they in label limbo and shopping around?

MFN closed its doors and they were unsigned for some time looking for labels. I think the long detailed version is somewhere on the official site either in the bio or ghost reveries session diary.

RR has its good and bad. Two years ago they were pretty good, but recently they have taken a turn for the worst, getting commercial sickness!

But i do say they did do a good job for opeth with the marketing of this album, just about everywhere i went reminded me that watershed was coming out.

RR are just really good at what they do, they sense where they can make money and hype it up! and in turn gives the band that they are hyping the money they deserve. Its just too bad that they decide to choose money over street cred!

Dark Ferret is correct. I look through the list of the bands RR has signed and 90% of them are shit. All that's good from them is Opeth, DT, PT, and about 2 or 3 others. And Demon is also correct, RR really know how to milk the bands they sign.

This doesn't have to turn into a "my bands are better than your bands" thread, but there's no denying that while current RR is a tad, shall we say, compromised, they were once the best metal label around, commercial or not.

RR was good back in the early 90's, went to hell in the late 90's, and the early part of the new millenium, with nu-metal commercial garbage. They're somewhat making a comeback with some decent metal bands now, Opeth, Dream Theater and PT to name a few. But that's only because the metal market is heading in that direction. They no doubt go where the money is.

^ like what? other than Opeth the only band I can think of worth a fuck on RR is cradle of filth. Love them or hate them, I love em.

Deicide, Death, Sadus, Obituary, King Diamond, Gorguts, Laaz Rockit, Sepultura, Mercyful Fate, Motorhead, Type O Negative, Cynic, Annihilator? Any of these ring a bell?

Stop talking when you're clearly uninformed.

He's talking about bands on Roadrunner now, and I don't think any of those bands are on Roadrunner anymore. Roadrunner is a total joke of a label now, all they sign is hipster bullshit designed for Hot Topic kids.

Did you just call Opeth hipster bullshit designed for Hot Topic kids?

1-They needed a label
2-RR is a legendary metal label (Death, Cynic, Sepultura, etc)
3-RR allows a better distribution around the world. So all the kiddy who are mad to not get their candy on the first day, stop crying.
4-They can make more money
5-Better tour support

/end this thread

RR can't be too bad if they still have a band under contract
that has been non-existant for 7 years (Death).

Either way, R.I.P. Chuck.
