If you are upset about Opeth signing to Road Runner

There may not be one other band on Road Runner's roster that I dig, but that has nothing to do with this album. Are we all supposed to stop listening to those bands? Is the music you enjoy so dependent on who else is listening to it. If every Dave Mathews fan on the planet started digging At The Gates would you stop?

And what about Porcupine Tree? How many of you that loved In Absentia or Deadwing or Signify would hate those exact same albums and songs if Opeth had released them?

I think a lot of people need to realise that they really don't care as much about music as they think they do.

I think its the fear of some people that they are going to be unable to decorate themselfes with a super underground band noone knows anymore just because small children run around in Opeth shirts. Probably the same people judge music or artists because of their trueness. Maybe they think Opeth is no longer a true underground band making great music just because they are offering themselfes to a bigger audience. Its not about labels or the new fans, the audience, or their touring with some more commercial bands, its just about what Opeth always did: great music. And if those people are seriously liking the older stuff, and are listening to Ghost Reveries thinking it sucks, because its something like "§&$/§&idontknow(§&$ then they just missed the fucking core of it all. Thats it guys. If the change to another label spoils the fun, its just their problem. Dont annoy.

Just the hardcore fans of metallica from its garage days when no one knew them thought metallica sold out.when in fact they sold out with st. anger came out. after the departure of their bass player they got some dude from ozzy's crew and made crappy music.

Well Addressed Austin...alot of those immature metal elitists don't know much about good metal anyway. I used to be an elitist myself, but I realized, that there's more to life and music than limiting yourself to one subcultural barrier. I think Depresy - The grand magnificence is a great melodeath record...but I also think In Flames - The Jester race is too. These people will say "you complain about people only listening to obscure bands, because you don't know those bands yourself and you're jealous" well the thing is...all of those bands are mostly generic failing copycats and their small band of fat internet surfing, shit talking, jackasses will eventually grow out of the music, or drive themselves mad from only listening to those bands and being in denial of good music for so long. It's about growing up to a higher maturity level..not lowering yourself. Kinda like getting into other styles of music, instead of ONLY listening to metal all day long when you're 25 or something.

Anyone who thought Opeth were still "underground" after Blackwater Park is an idiot anyway.

It's NOT metal compared to the metal that is out today. Opeth re-defined what metal can be. I agree Opeth is unlike the metal we are used to, and that's probably why classic-metalers won't dig Opeth that much. I honestly believe Opeth is a fan strcictly for people with a GRAND, variety of tastes in music;

Dealing with faggots at shows. I don't want to hang out with 14 year olds who don't really know anything about metal and spout ignorance about it standing beside me in goth makeup when i am trying to enjoy some tunes. That's the biggest reason i dislike it. Plus i've gone to great depths analyzing the songs (on the first 5 albums anyway) to understand them, not only lyrically, but all else that is going on, and i can't stand talking to someone about it who's only responses is "yeah it's godly" or "yeah it rocks" or "mikael is a genius". I'm too old for Opeth now.

I must admit I was a little worried when I heard about the roadrunner signing but thats natural going by the labels past track record. It wasn't the fear that I won't be able to decorate myself with some super underground band, it was that the band would change it's sound. And I'm sure all of you are as big a fans of Opeth as I am, so of course it's normal to worry whether your favourite band is going to conform to the labels run of the mill sound.

This was all before I heard the album. Now I'm totally convinced with it and love it as much as the other albums. And god knows the band deserves a break after all these years.

I've stated before, in a another thread, that while I dont like GR, I think what Opeth's success is doing for metal is good. It's becoming more accepted again, and this is a good thing for up and coming bands who would have had to stay deeply underground before.
