How did you become part of the local metal scene?

Your imagination, of course!
So I go to school in Philly (sophomore at Drexel University actually) and really wanted to know how you guys became part of the metal scene. At 19, I can't drink so I feel becoming friends with metalheads and bands and traveling with them and going to festivals and drinking and such is a little more of a challenge when you aren't of legal age, but what can I do to become a REAL metalhead. I feel that dressing and listening to metal is good and all, but I occasionally "bro out" for the sake of fitting in and enjoying college parties. I'd much rather be with like-minded individuals and I know Philly is a great city for metal. I mean fucking Relapse...

So yeah, how did you guys do it?

Believe me, I've been to shows and been around the scene, but don't know how to get deep into it.

Getting to know metalheads or even metal musicians is just like getting o know anyone else. You have to just chew the fat. I've noticed that in the medium sized city that I live in (around 500,000) that the metal scene is small, and all it takes is to go to about 4 or 5 shows before you've met almost everyone who's "in" the scene. After getting to be acquainted with these people, I've since met and/or drank with various musicians. I know I sound like an egoistic cock when I say this, but I would have to meet a real legend (like Tony Iommi) to get star struck. Most of the guys I've met that play in the bands that I (and some of you) listen to are working class slobs like myself, so it's just like hanging out with any other metal head. There have been some real treats, e.g. (in retrospect) it was fucking awesome sitting at the bar and BSing with Vitek (R.I.P.).

metal composes about 2-4% of the music scene here. A lot of what goes on is stupid tejano concerts, which is an annoying as hell version of accordian bullshit. When I do go to a show it doesn't take long to recognize someone from middle or high school or even college, whether I know them or not. I usually have to supplement by also going to punk concerts, which is pretty much just as small as a percentage and is viewed in the same manner by the tejano/hip-hop mojados y cholos y todos los pinche hispanico que vive en esta ciudad y no gustan la musica de nosotors. Pero no se vale porque quando puedo yo quiere mover a austin o houston porque tiene mas cosas para acer y tiene mas concertos de musica metal de aqui.

I live in a town of 46,000 people. There's 4 bands here, 2 Attack Attack clones, a Lamb of God clone (They sound exactly like Ashes of the Wake), and a band that rips off Opeth and Nile. There is no scene here. So there's no scene to get into.

The biggest band to ever play in my town was Fuck The Facts, and surprisingly they were a staple, and are considered homegrown here.

Being a part of scene means being fucked in the ass and cocaine. Well atleast in the model bussiness. Also in the porn bussiness. In metal it means being gay.

You shouldn't be trying hard to be a 'REAL' metalhead (whatever the fuck that means). Just be yourself and talk to like minded people, there is no formula. Setting out to fit into a certain demographic of people is silly.

Honestly the best way to do that is to go online and find local people on facebook or myspace or whatever who like metal. I wouldn't worry about being a REAL METALHEAD though, there are surely lots of kids on campus who like metal.

Drexel must have a metal radio show. Talk to the DJ and see what he/she does. Maybe after you meet some like-minded Drexel students, start a student group to bring metal, hardcore, punk etc bands to campus?

Here in Iran there is no club or Metal concert or whatever. So no metal scene here.Oh and the government and media here say that Metal is a satanic music.
You guys should be happy that you can buy the stuff you like and go to concerts.

I live in WV... there is no metal here.

The only one I can even think of was Byzantine, and they were a groove metal band.

There's no metal scene in Taiwan Or South Africa either, can't imagine it's as bad as Iran though, at first I thought you were just kidding when you said you were from Iran... :ill:

There's no metal scene in Belfast unfortunately.

I mean, you have a few people that like metal, but honestly I think I'm the most into it in the whole area.
