How Did You Get Into Metal?

mmmmmmmmmmffff, Boston is.. I dunno, I would suggest checking out the 2 CD Styx best of or something if you want to really judge... cause Boston...meh, I just plain don't like that band. Irritating sounding vocals, every other song being about a rock n' roll party and calling your girlfriend 'mama', too much white bluesy strutting, etc, etc..................

I used to hate them until I realized, "hey this is unprentitious 70s rock"

nothing trying to be something it's not. good rockin' tunes. don't set your expectations too high.

Yes but I just illustrated I don't like what it *is*. :p ..empty white boy rock that makes my brain cells die. :loco: I certainly think you can be 'unpretentious' and 'rocking' without being completely stupid. Your vantage point is interesting and I want to ask what comprises pretentious in rock music.

Too vague..do you imply those things in of themselves are pretentious, and if so what of them, elementally, makes them that way? Or do you mean the combination of those things, and if so - again, why?

"Lady" is a good one, partly because it was in the movie Old School when Vince Vaughn mimicked it but Styx for the most part are pretty goddamned gay if you ask me.

My dad stared me off on the music he liked best which was Sabbath, Mahavishmu orchestra, Zappa, and Rush, my best friend's father, who was a bit younger, was in to Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Megadeth. Then I caught a college radio station when I was young, and started hearing tunes off of Deicide, Morbid angel, Cannibal Corpse, and Death's early albums...

I wish my college radio station would play music like that, all we play is Top 40.

My dad introduced me. I started with Classic Rock and Metal and eventually evolved through Thrash, then Slipknot, then Metalcore, and so on.

Once I discovered in Flames and Children Of Bodom, I was in a completely different world.

Was already listening to Metallica, Tool, and Isis long before I was a metalhead, but brother showed me the opening riff to Opeth's Bleak so I put Blackwater Park on my iPod and fell in love with The Leper Affinity, then the whole album, then the band, then the genre..

Like a lot of other people, I was first introduced to nu metal in Grade 5. My older brother gave me his old Korn albums and I loved them. I then found out about two more nu metal bands: Slipknot and Disturbed, and also liked these bands very much. I then got into the classics, like Metallica, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, and then found about black metal and death metal.

I suppose I came into the Metal scene through The Offspring, they got me into the whole alternative music away from Mainstream, then I heard Children of Bodom in 2002. They just opened my ears to everything Metal.

I've been a long time fan of Rammstein, so they were my first metal band. At first I was in the metalcore crowd, but then transgressed into metal :headbang:
