How do you guys like this...

Sometimes, when I don' feel like listening to Metal, I dig into my records and pull out a CD by 3 fabulous guitarists: Paco deLucia, Al diMeola and John McLaughlin. It's only classical/accoustic guitars, and I feel some songs have almost Opethian qualities. Not throughout entire songs, but I can't help but feel like our dear Mr. Akerfeldt possibly gets inspired by such music as well. Chord structures, arpeggios etc...

If only I had half the proficiency of Paco deLucia, that guy is a real Monster!

I can see the similarities. Though I think Mike's acoustic stuff is relatively basic (though awesome), and he had a pretty similar style way back when writing Orchid so, given that his tastes were probably way more limited way back then...I would somewhat doubt there's much actual influence from players like this.

When I do not feel like metal, I listen often to Dead Can Dance, and Lisa Gerrard's solo stuff.

yeah crushing artists all. ive been into paco for a while, got a little bit of the other two. if you want to listen to some nouveau-flamenco (bit more commercialised and accessible i guess) try jesse cook - tempest or ottmar liebert - nouveau flamenco, awesome shit.
