how long do you think opeth will last?

Mike's not yet 30 even. I think there's another 8-9 years and prolly as many albums in him, Plus whatever he and steven wilson do as a side project, and that will be amazing.

I don't think Opeth is going away any time soon.

HOWEVER, their sound, although it does pogress from album to album, is fairly consistent, as Mikael has recognized in interviews. He doesn't mind this, because he obviously likes how Opeth sounds, but I think that he will grow increasingly more interested in other things (hence the side projects, "Damnation", etc.)

He is a man of great taste and will only continue Opeth for as long as he knows they will remain good and consistent.

And when Opeth is over, I have no doubt in my mind that, in one form or another, Mikael will continue to make music for the rest of his life.

I bet many of us will grow with him as he progresses as a musician...and although I wish Opeth would never end, it won't be all over when it does. I'm excited to see what else he will have planned. :)

But until then...

7 albums now.. almost. That's more than a lot of bands make it through.

I'd like to say they'll be around forever, but that's what I said about Stabbing Westward (yes, I am a poser) and well things didn't go too well for them...

I agree that even if Opeth does end, Mikael will continue making music either solo, with Steve Wilson or whoever he gets the whim to work with. He said in the past that music is his life and I have no doubt that he will stick to that word and continue making music throughout his life.

And we will all of course follow his progress as a musician throughout our lives.

It's great to say that he'll continue on in music, in some form or other, but let's face facts; it won't be Opeth. I thought the same thing when Emperor split, but I -still- miss that band. Both Samoth and Trym have Zyklon and Ihsahn has Peccatum, Thou Shalt Suffer, and whatever other side projects he's involved in, but it's never going to be Emperor again. And -that- is something I can't get used to.

shit. I'm 22 now, and I really wouldn't mind being 45 or 50 and buying a *new* Opeth cd. Whatever Opeth will evolve into, progrock or whatnot, I know it will be a good listen because of mikael, and I look forward to following and watching his footsteps throughout his artistic life.

I think this is probably the most true statement of the thread. I would sincerely doubt Opeth would stop after Damnation... I'm just curious to where their musical direction will take them next. (I would expect a death vox CD after.)

I think they'll pull a Emperor. One or two more albms and then Mike will end it and keep doin his solo stuff.
I'd much rather see them do that and go out with a bang then to fade away with progressively worse albums like some bands. *Cough*Metallica and Megadeth*Cough*
