I just got Morningrise!

Hey fellas. Just to give a quick opinion. I reckon that Opeth have gradually gotten worse since their starting out. Don't get me wrong, I love their music (wankers... haha), but MAYH was my favourite album. Morningrise is starting to level it after my fourth listen... fuck knows where it will measure after a couple of days. Still Life is a great album, but in comparison... you know what I'm getting to. Blackwater Park is a good album, but when people ask why others don't like it so much, I would have to say (in my case), that from Dirge for Novermber's drawn out ending onwards, the album loses it's magic. Finally, Deliverance is a superb album (better than BWP in my opinion), and yet it isn't as musically ambitious as the aforementioned album (let alone Still Life down), and therefore is less potentially interesting, in my opinion, whilst at the same time being surprisingly more so. If you get that, then good for you.

Yeah DoReMi, I can definitely see your opinion. I'm in favour of it...I LOVE all their albums, but I just can't really say they are getting worse, just their sense of style was a bit more superb during the Orchid and Morningrise days...sure, you'll find moments of "AWE" in the latter albums, but IMO, it just doesn't have that same "WOW" factor as say in their previous, epic, melodic songs.

The first may be the BEST albums, but dammit...the others are so damn good that I just don't really mind anymore (I just wish they had more then just the two in that more "melodic" style).

Like I said, all the albums from Opeth AT LEAST get an 8.5/10 from me - not one falls below that. But, in order of preference I think it would have to go like this;

Morningrise
Orchid
Blackwater Park
My Arms, Your Hearse
Still Life
Damnation
Deliverance (and dammit, this album still has its moments of sheer AWE!)

I'd have to slightly disagree with you, DoReMi, by saying Opeth's music is not getting worse, but rather their music is evolving. Of course, in any sense of 'evoloving music', there will be fans of old Opeth, and fans of newer Opeth. Although it does seem to be that a lot of people seem to enjoy their older stuff (MAYH, Orchid, etc.).

Its been interesting as an avid reader of this discussion board since I joined only a few mere months ago that there has been an increasing number of posts revering not only Morningrise but Orchid.
The style of Deliverance and more obviously Damnation is surely a major factor.
I have previously posted many times on how Orchid is undeniably the most unique sounding album they have released. (Not necessarily the best-whatever that means-or the most technical etc).
However (surely the greatest word in fence sitting history),they never riffed quite like that again and there is a certain metal edge of old school on Orchid that just makes it such a great change from the rest of their brilliant catalogue.
look I think like most Opeth fans the mood of the albums shifts with our own.

Morningrise and MAYH are my favorite Opeth albums. The other ones are good too, but those are just my favorite, for many different reasons. If I had to pick ONE favorite, it would definitely be Morningrise.
