I need a decent mp3 player.

@ andrew: damn dude. well, at least you got one. some asshole is riding mine around somewhere. probably in this same neighborhood. i doubt theres a big international black market for stolen bikes. the worst part is some dumb motherfucker doesnt even know what he's riding. "hurrr, my feet dont fit on these here little tiny pedals."

@DG oh well, i'll ride it into the ground and when i get a job buy a new one and put this one on a wall somewhere. Lotta memories.. And the coolest accessory ever... MONKEY HORN!

Why don't I care about mp3 players?

There goes my resolution... I just bought one of these beasts, a Creative Zen Touch 20 Go

I'll be travelling a lot in the coming months and I just won't be arsed anymore with the carrying cds around.

I hate myself but that's ok

I didn't read the entire thread but the best mp3 player out there is iRiver.

if anyone else said it before me then <3.

Seriously: BEST sound quality, best memory, best software (omg, there is none! so you can plug it ANYWHERE) best battery life, did I say
best sound quality ?

;)

yeah the thing that bothered me with the Creative is that windows does not recognize it as a hard drvive so you have to go through their interface and I hate installing producer softwares... but otherwise price, features, feedback from customers, just fine. Wish me luck dealing with this shit.

Keep on proposing 20gb++ models please.I'm a noob, my bday's coming and I'll need one to replace my 512mb I got for free.

I had to do a ton of research on mp3 players, when my wife decided she wanted one for her marathon training. I obviously wanted a flash player, but even then I knew she'd probably kill that. Throw it in front of a semi truck or something, you know.

Sure enough the first one died in less than a year. The second one has been going strong for like 6 months. She kills headphones by the week, it seems like.

I have a 1gb flash player for the very reason you state. I run between three and six miles a day, I've had one flash player for a year and a half an it still works. With the number of times it's been dropped, rained on and other stuff, that's quite impressive.

The other reason I got a 1gb player is that my CD collection takes up 150 gig so I can never get it all on a HD player. I figured I might as well save money, change the music on my player regularly, and if it does break (unlikely) or I get mugged, then I don't have to shell out £200 for another.

Flash players rock.

EDIT:

Unfortunately, these days they only sell their mediocre H10 line in the US. If you want a good iRiver now, you have to import the H320 or H340 from Australia or Korea. I got an H10 20GB for Christmas this year... No .ogg support, 'requires' fucking Windows Media Player to access it with your computer (you can still drag and drop, but you have to spend 5-10 minutes letting it rebuild the database every time you do this in order for it to play the tracks in order), and the firmware it ships with is a broken piece of shit so you have to grab the new version online. To top that off, mine crapped out on me after about 2.5 months of use and I have yet to send it back for replacement. I've heard great things about the H300 series, but avoid the H10 series at all costs.

yeah i've heard really bad things about newer iriver series and especially their american models

actually they ship the same models outside US with different firmware = no WMP dependence, from what i've heard. i have an iriver ifp-799 which is a 1gbyte flash player. i updated it with their UMS firmware so it now functions as a standard usb storage device. supports mp3, wma, ogg, etc.

i happened across a consumer reports journal today that was all electronic shit. mp3 players were one of the many devices reviewed. iirc, a samsung was the number one rated flash player. dont remember the HD ones because i dont think theyre feasible for exercising, so i didnt even look.
sony just released a 1gb flash player that looks good. i might get it. $120 i think.
