I need non satanic/gore death metal!

Orphaned Land ("Sahara" and "El norra alila")
Bolt Thrower (everything)
Unleashed (everything)
Pestilence ("Consuming Impulse" and "Testimony of the ancients")

Nile ........... simply about Egyptian history and mythology ...
and Amon Amarth btw does have anti-christian lyrics! but they aren't as explicit as lot of things mentioned, they simply are about rediscovering the scandinavian culture before christianity destroyed it. there is this great song: one thousand years of oppression for example ...

I wouldve thought that satanic and christian metal would pretty much be the same. they dont exist without another so if one says 'fuck jesus' then the other will say 'fuck satan' its pretty much the same thing isnt it?

I dont believe Opeth to be true full on death metal...
Their lyrics are deeper then real death metal, they have more meaning, more food for thought.

And i dont see y people listen to music when they cant understand the lyrics. i think thats stupid, like people who listen to music in a different language... the listen because "it sounds good". Lamest reason ever. It sounds good, give me a break. But thats my opinion, if u disagree dont worry just ignore me as a rambling idiot lol.

I judge a song half on the music half on lyrics.

Sorry i cant help with answering ur question, im looking for music similiar to opeth too, specifically their lighter style...

Good recs....

but I think that the original poster....well...you're not going to find too many bands that don't have some lyrical content dealing with the dark forces. That's the point of a lot of metal!

There's ENTOMBED...my favorites being Left Hand Path and Clandestine...LHP does have some lyrics that could be misconstrued as being satanist but I just think they are more like a commentary on what Christianity forces people to do/believe in.

You could try RAPTURE...I only have Futile and Songs for the Withering (they have a 3rd album I have yet to hear), but you'd probably like those...

also SACRILEGE (Sweden)...they have two albums: Lost in the Beauty You Slay and The Fifth Season....both top notch! It's Daniel Svensson from In Flames' first band (trust me....they are WAY better than IF)...

If you like doom metal, you check out PARAMAECIUM (Australia)...they're X-tian.

hmmm....really am hard pressed to think of bands....honestly....if you are looking to not be offended by lyrics, death/gore metal is probably not the best place to start.

addendum:

SACRILEGE puts all the other melodic DM bands to shame!

and another: AT THE GATES...my personal favorites being With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness and Slaughter of the Soul...

Well, for me the lyrics have never been so important, so I mostly listen to the music only, but bad lyrics can really ruin an otherwise good song, so it's not like the lyrics don't matter... I hope you can see my point of view :)

For music similar to lighter Opeth, obvious recommendations would be Porcupine Tree (a good "starting point"-album could be for example In Absentia), Riverside (Second Life Syndrome) and Camel (The Snow Goose).

for me I would say in most bands I listen to its 90% music 10% lyrics... thats why I can listen to a band like Phish jam for half an hour while singing one line over and over... hahahahahah

but obviously Lyrics, when done well make the music so much better. Floyd, Opeth, Ayreon.......... GO LYRICS :headbang:

in terms of death metal that doesnt involve fucking the corpse of christ... I would say Nile is defenitly your best choice... When you first read the song titles you might still be like "Whoa"... but its all just based off of Egyption history and mythology like a previous poster said...

Ive only started getting into this EXTREME style of metal/deathmetal recently. so my CD collection isnt that great for this stuff. but from what ive heard, Nile is head and shoulders above other extreme metal bands... if anyone feels there are bands in this style, way better than Nile. please list them and point them out, id love to hear them.

Opeth are definitely death metal. If they aren't, then later Death certainly isn't, because the lyrical content was the same, or even deeper than Opeth.

I listen to Cannibal Corpse, because I think the lyrics are hilariously funny. They're so outrageous, and I don't think they're meant to be taken seriously.

Good "non-Satanic" death metal? The only "Satanic" band I can really think of Deicide. Anyway, I guess later Death, Opeth obviously, Nile (although some of the descriptions are gorey, but they're usually said by Sanders and you can never understand him anyway), uhh...can't really think of anymore.

try:

Novembre!!!! Italian band. They are a bit similar to Opeth, but not the same (of course, nothing is). They recorded their debut a week after Opeth recorded Orchid, in the same studio :) (Dan Swano's Unisound). Best album to me is Novembrine Waltz.

Edge of Sanity's Crimson - defintely a good album! one 40-minute long song. story about a time in the future when men lose the ability to breed. then suddenly a child is born. but is she of man, made of flesh and blood? or is she the offspring of the unholy (here mikael kicks in with guest DM vocals) GODDDDDDDDD!

Not really satanic in nature, but of course it's no happy song too :) At least there is no rough lyrics.

Dan Swano - Moontower. Not really Death Metal, but definitely good :) A very introspective record... some the lyrics are some of the best ever written, i.e. Add Reality, The Big Sleep.

Ulver - Bergtatt. More black metal then DM but very good nonetheless. No satanic themes, it's a Norwegian Folk tale (hence the subtitle "Et eventyr I 5 capittler). Very very good.

Let's see.... what else?

Agalloch? To me, Pale Folklore is very good. I don't like The Mantle. Again, it's not really death metal... it's not even metal at all I think. But good anyway :)

+1 for Cynic by the way! Great album!

Check out Dying Fetus. Their name may turn you off but their lyrics are actually quite insightful and don't use any Christ bashing. Just read "Praise the Lord (Opium of the Masses)." It's probably ironic that I gave that song as an example because it actually comments on religion but those are my favorite lyrics from them.

Anyway, they are very technical but do not go overboard and the songwriting is amazing. Catchy, brutal, technical, intelligent.

^ Come on, now that's just senseless talk!... I could care less if it's christian or satanic or nothing because as long as it sounds good then I'm fine!

Smart man. I'm myself. But I listen to everything with an open mind. Anyone who listens to a band just because of its satan content needs counselling or a girlfriend.

KFK

In Flames. Aside from Opeth, the only death metal band I like, and they also have intelligent, non stupid-gore lyrics.

Greetings - if you're looking for some good bands.

Ensiferum is death vocals/power riffing/viking lyrics, they're pretty enjoyable.
Dark Tranquility is a great band, espessially "Character" I really enjoy how political and meaningful they get with that album espessially.
Iced Earth is an awesome, awesome band. Their lyrics are a bit satanic at times, but really, it's more story telling than anything. Though they are not death metal...
Immortal is a great black metal band. I've never actually read their lyrics, but I remember reading something that specifically said they were not an anti-religion/christianity band. Their music is really, really great IMO.

Then of course, there is Finntroll ;)

How much Carcass have you actually listened to? o_O
The later stuff (Heartwork/Swansong) avoids gore themes and manages to kick arse.
Aside from them, the only other band I can think of at the moment is Strapping Young Lad. There's probably more though, I'll add them when I think of them.

In Flames lyrics aren't particularly intelligent, but they aren't unintelligent (well, the ones that count anyway - i.e. pre-Clayman.)

Good recommendation though - get The Jester Race and Lunar Strain.

haha, Left Hand Path is not satanic?? ... come on, the Left Hand Path is the way of satanism ... it is the very definition of it! ... so any cd named like that IS about satanism
