I thought there was already a thread for recording Bass Guitar.

If you get a Sansamp..which are you talking about? The bass driver IS a DI. I would track with that and then mult it. This is where I wish I had PT, because I would use the Sansamp plugin on that multed track. The sansamp plugin is not emulating the same sound as the BassDriver I dont think.

I am going to try reamping through the bass driver though because I'd like to hear what it does. I would just have to tweak the knobs hard and get extreme with it.

I don't understand why you guys aren't just recording two tracks from the Sansamp BDDI. There is a parallel output which is instrument level and unaffected as well as an instrument level affected signal, although those are both 1/4" outputs. If your interface won't take the 1/4" then you can send the affected signal out through the BDDI and the unaffected signal, via 1/4", into another DI.

I always am recording two tracks whenever I track my bass parts. One is the parallel out and the other is the driven sound.

i know it's not full-on metal, but my absolute favorite bass tone EVER comes from RATM - evil empire...that shit just hits like nothing else. tim c. has said that most of the bass sound on that album came off of his amps, but that a little bit of DI was mixed in as well

1 trick that i don't see a lot of people using to get real punchy bass is to use a SDC on a 10" speaker - the lower mass of the diaphragm gives better transient response, which really helps bring out the attack. a lot of SDC's also have great low-end response - and if yours don't, get the low-end off of the DI track.

for some stuff I like the piano-like basstones on the old overkill-recordings...

anyway, best bass for metal: WARWICK!
tha thing just GROWLS and has a midrange that sits really well in distorted guitars...

CULT OF LUNA - The beyond Has the best bass tone ever..
I wish i knew how did they get that tone..

hell yeah!!!
Dun Dun dun, Dun Dun dun, Dun Dun dun, Dun Dun dun,

Korn bass sound?? where?? OH that clicking thing? :puke:

Also agreed on RATM amazing bass sound

Oh yeah....completely blanked out and forgot to mention I do this also. But I like sometimes have my main clean DI bass track run thorugh the sansamps settings so I can tweak the tone that way. Instead of using it as my distortion track, I like to use it as my main sound with less distortion. It can beef up the bass tone a lot, and then you have to mult.

This man speaks the truth...

I think the main cause of crap bass tone is crap bass guitar.

Pick a bass that is made of awesome wood and has new strings at a decent tension before thinking of recording it.

Warwick, I believe, pwns every bass in the mid-department. MusicMan Sterling's/Stringray's also have killer mids and sounds awesome when given a tiny bit of distortion(listen to Scar Symmetry). Pretty much, if you get a bass that is made in Europe/America, you should be sweet. Asian production line basses fail.

I think bass tone also differs greatly on whether the bassist plays with his fingers or with a pick.

btw, hello all! Fist post... been reading for a long time though.:D

Mnemic - Passenger. Best basstone i've heard right there :D That whole album has a kickass production once you get used to it. I like mixes that stand out a bit, that has something out of the ordinary to them. Anyone have any general tips for achieving a bass sound like that?

is there a specific model or model range best suited.

All Warwick's sound very similar, only minor tonal differences. The standard sound you will hear is from a Thumb Neck-Through Bass, but you will get a very, very similar sound from a Bolt-On version.

bass tones that i love:

sharlee d'angelo(arch enemy) - wages of sin

Right on! :headbang:
And not just on that CD, every album where Sharlee appeared had a stellar bass sound, so full, present and rich, yet not sharp and clicky...

Any clues to his sound guys? I know he plays a Rickenbacker bass, I think I read somewhere he uses Ampeg SVT with 8x10...

Ok..here is a tip that I think will assist you a lot..sharp and clicky sucks, and we all struggle with this. What you want to do to solve this is use a mult.

This is how I did a bass track last night, try it if you want:

Take your DI bass part and roll off the highs a little...this will vary..my last recording, the DI rolled off to like 10k.

Now, the fun stuff..take the mult and high pass it. A lot of people do it to 800hz, but for me that does not work. I high pass it to around 300hz. I low pass to around 3k. So now we have a tone focused in the mids. I also boosted the hell out of 800hz for my situation.

Next step...compress this bastard hard..I use 2 compressors in series. I highly reccomend Blockfish for this..it's free..so just use it. Start with blockfish and put the saturation on max..the speed of the compressor should be as fast as possible. Compress it hard..turn that dial all the way right. After Blockfish, I added the URS 1970 with a fast attack..I compressed this hard also.

The key here is the fast attack of the compressor..this is what will give you "that sound" without the sharp and clicky transients.

Ok, now you put in your distortion plug of choice. Mine is Quadrafuzz in Cubase. I scroll through the bass presets until I get ballpark of what I want. Then I take out some high mids and take out all the highs. I boost the crap out of the low mids.

You can follow quadrafuzz with a speaker emulator if you want..this is optional, because you really won't need it...or maybe you will, each mix is different.

Now...you drop this distorted track with the main DI so it is around 60% DI...use your ears.

Buss both tracks to Bass submix.

On that submix, I put colortone pro first in the chain and used the SSL preset. Why? It just sounded good..you dont have to do this. Next I pull out the Waves SSL channel (or your EQ compressor of choice). I boost 60hz around 6db, cut 200hz around 6db with a decent Q, then boost 700hz a little. I finish off with a big fast boost of 3k (Waves SSL is great for this). At this point, since you lowered the highs on your distorted track, they will still sound very controlled and won't be clicky.

Finally, I slap on Rbass set at 80hz. I keep the output controlled so it is not clipping.

Result : satanic bass that cuts through huge guitars but does not sound rattley or clicky.

Good sounding tips BattleTits, I think I'll give that a whirl.

I'm a fan of Sharlee D'Angelo sound on the album Dead Again by Mercyful Fate, especially in the song "The Night". One of my faves...

I also like that 80's thrash sound mid range sound where you can kind of hear the lows rumbling in the background but hear the notes being picked too (Shovel Headed Killing Machine sorta-sound)

NOT a fan of the slappy/clicky Nu-Metal sound that was quite popular a few years back where it sounds like the strings are falling off though!

Agreed... Cult Of luna has the coolest basssound ever.. they used a Ampeg 8x10 with a SVT classic and a Golmer the blues pedal. (onlyu 50 of those made.. the band has like 10.. bastards.. they use it on everything.. synths, bass, guitars..) next to that i don't know what they used.. would love to know how to get that tone!
