I thought there was already a thread for recording Bass Guitar.

dUG's rig's changed again according to the King's X recording thread over on GS. Behringer stuff in there now (ahhhhh!). He's still splitting a combination of DI/Bass Amp/Guitar Amp though.

Michael Wagener goes into some detail documenting the recording process so it's worth a look. I can't access GS from this office, but it should be easy enough to find.

I want to get that awesome prog rock bass clarity... like bands like Kaipa have.... awesome stuff.

CULT OF LUNA - The beyond Has the best bass tone ever..
I wish i knew how did they get that tone..

fender precision > Golmer the blues distortion > Sunn Model T + matching 4x12 cab.

Thats what he said when i asked him and its also what he used live.
Golmer is also a tubescreamer kind of pedal.. only 40 were made or something.

I need to get a Sansamp to reamp bass DI's into. Would this be worth it you think?

Yes yes yes and yes,

I reamp bass all the time through my sansamp!
I also like to be able to put a overdrive infront of it while reamping bass and just kicking it in at parts that can need it (in Tool/APC kinda stuff specially)

I've heard some direct-input bass recordings that were better than big-budget stuff.

I've managed to bodge a reasonably pleasing noise using of all things NI Guitar Rig 2 using a crossover with the lows into the SVT model and the highs into a distorted JCM800 model with highs and lows filtered out.

What the hell do you do with 5 bass tracks and why would you NEED to record that many? Do you put them all center or span them over everything?

What the hell do we do with five bass tracks? Whatever the fuck we want. You can never have too many tracks - worst case scenario, there's a mute button. Usually bass stays in the center.

cephalic carnage: anomalies
byzantine: and they shall....
blood red throne: come death:headbang:
and the ultimate bass tone: geezer butler!!!!!!:worship: anyone know his recording setup?

Cephalic Carnage bass tone! love it, If we ask nice Dave might chime in.

I had 5 bass tracks for our CD only because at the time I didn't know what tone would work best. We recorded the bass at our rehearsal space with no monitors, only headphones. Since I didn't think I would be able to adequately tell what I liked, I used a variety of methods (POD, DI, Sansamp and 2 mikes). I ended up only using the DI, Sansamp and Bass POD tracks...Each one playing up what part of the spectrum sounded best, grouped them together, added a touch of Quadra-Fuzz, comp and EQ.

I do believe that in some cases, too much is exactly that. But, for me, I liked having the options come mix time.

I just did something very similar, I re-amped the DI signal through a Ampeg SVT 3 rig, had a sm57 on a 10” and a sm7b on a 15” which turned out great but I also used the DI signal and re-amped it through a Sansamp DI and I then duplicated that track and inserted a gain plug on it just to add some dirt. So all in all I am using 5 tracks but the bulk of the sound is the straight DI and the SVT 3. maybe overkill but it sounds good.

Which mics do you guys prefer for recording bass? I've always recorded bass direct in, but I want to start experimenting with recording the rig as well.

I just used a SM57 on the 4x10 cab and a SM7 on the 15" cab and it turned out pretty killer.
