I mean, there is a difference between pledging support to the Cuban people and pledging support to the Cuban regime. The BLM letter clearly does the former.

This isn't to deny the government's treatment of its citizens; but I feel like a lot of conservatives are going out of their way to paint the statement as hypocritical because it apologizes for human rights violations in Cuba. I don't read it that way. And it is true that geopolitical treatment of Cuba by the liberal West has been a factor in their current economic situation.

Communism may or may not be a viable national system, but in the case of Cuba it's impossible to really tell since the U.S. and other superpowers have meddled in their affairs since the '60s.

At the same time, doctors and engineers moonlight as cabbies in Cuba because wages for those careers are abysmal. I don't think it's a stretch of the imagination to assume devoid of U.S. meddling their brand of communism *would function.

Edit: I meant to say *wouldn't.

Agreed. I don't think we should elevate Cuba as an emblem of functioning state socialism. But the utter fanaticism with which US conservatives rail against socialism/communism is frightening in its own right, and has led to significant geopolitical turmoil, which has made it more difficult for Cuba and other socialist countries to trade internationally.

All that aside, what's happening now goes beyond the US embargo, so it's disingenuous to reduce it to that for sure.

Someone I know shared this on Facebook.

...I don't think Ben understands Don Quixote.

I saw this a few days ago. Ben insists he gets it, but that in this case "the windmills are real," or something like that. The guy's a hack.
