I'm recording this band on Monday

Hmm, yeah, between everything that's been said here and the fact that they bill themselves as "progressive / hardcore / experimental", I can't bring myself to listen to any of this for fear of covering my computer in puke - but hey, good luck Jon, go with Christ! :D

I hadn't realised they had a video... Check out that fill at 0:50, so much energy, such a strong vibe!. I also love the invisible keyboardist.

edit: oh, there they are (the keyboards)!

only because they dont have rody.
i detest protest the hero with a passion
one of the worst bands out there today

are you a guitarist? perhaps the hate is because you are jealous that you can't play half as well them? hah... (talking about protest the hero. not the band on myspace)

EDIT: I've heard protest used to suck live a few years back, but I saw them this year and they were extremely tight and played everything really well... even rody's vocals were spot on, pretty much excellent for a live performance especially compared to many other big time bands I've seen with horrible out of tune live clean vocals. disliking the style is one thing, but there should still be some respect for the musicianship, I think...

Anyone know anything about the Roland TD-3 kit? standard MIDI mapping? Are the internal sounds usable at all?

I don't have the TD3 but i own the TD6. It's in standard GM mapping yeah. I think some of the kicks are pretty usable for metal but the rest sounds very fake in my opinion.

i am enlightened
i can do more with 3 chords than they can do with 100 notes
fuck pointless technicality, fuck rody wishing he was freddy mercury, fuck they're pretentious douchebag concept albums.
FUCK protest the hero.
and I respect the musicianship of good musicians. these guys are not good musicians, thus they do not earn my respect.
the hallmark of even the most virtuostic guitar players is RESTRAINT. The art of knowing when to shut the fuck up.
These guys, simply put, just don't know when to stop showing off and actually WRITE some music.
Kezia is fairly tolerable though. The quiet part of blindfolds aside with the following solo is really, really good.

:kickass:

now lets all chip in and buy jon as many beers as possible
cos after monday he aint gonna be the same man
we gotta give him a send off boys

man i actually think they're going to break you
i feel so sorry for you man
however, i still can't fucking wait for this hahaha

Good call, couldn't agree more! :D

Did I mention this is per-song deal? They've booked 6 days so far, will likely take triple that.

I think if I convince myself it will be a horrific trainwreck then I'll be pleasantly surprised when it's not so much.

Haha, that youtube video is just awesome , can't stop laughing . The vocal harmony at 0:58 is just epic.

i left some comments on their video last night
im sure you can all guess which are mine D: haha

Day 1 - Drums
Band came over just after 11 and set up the drums in the "booth" I have set up made from cubicle partitions. The booth doesn't block much of the clacking of the MIDI drums.

Drums are a Roland TD-3 kit, taking the MIDI out into my interface and using one of the Structure drumkits from here the AIR users blog. We're fairly happy with the sounds but there's some issues with realism on the fast snare parts, cymbals and hi-hat especially, just not enough velocity layers. But it's good enough for now. I'll perfect it later before I mix.

All the drums are quantized using Real-Time Properties on the MIDI regions. Yay! no beat detective! And the drummer isn't really that bad.

The hard part was these guys had no idea where their songs change from 6/4 to 4/4, to a bar of 7/4. Once I figured all that stuff out and found tempos that worked for each part things went pretty quickly.
Scratch guitars were done with the drums using Eleven for monitoring.

We got 3 of 5 song done for drums. Which is less than I hoped but it is what it is.
Got a headache from listening to the click all day.
Drummer can't come tomorrow so we'll continue drums Friday and move on to bass on the 3 that are ready.

Worst part about this is they're too polite! They're constantly apologizing for no reason and it drives me nuts.

But they showed up on time, didn't make a mess and paid me half. Could've been a LOT WORSE!

That comment there just killed me!Classic.

Sounds like it's shaping up good dude.

Sorry...............lol!
