I'm recording this band on Monday

Day 2 - Bass

It's too early to say who is the weakest link in the band. The bass player needs to step up his game FO SHO. Finished (barely) 2 of 3 songs.
Sigh I'm thinking of "cleaning up" the bass tracks by playing them myself. I spent a lot of time waiting while he played an 8 bar section in loop record, and I STILL needed to punch in parts.

Here's a little clip from one of the songs. http://files.getdropbox.com/u/1053122/raise.mp3

i am enlightened
i can do more with 3 chords than they can do with 100 notes
fuck pointless technicality, fuck rody wishing he was freddy mercury, fuck they're pretentious douchebag concept albums.
FUCK protest the hero.
and I respect the musicianship of good musicians. these guys are not good musicians, thus they do not earn my respect.
the hallmark of even the most virtuostic guitar players is RESTRAINT. The art of knowing when to shut the fuck up.
These guys, simply put, just don't know when to stop showing off and actually WRITE some music.
Kezia is fairly tolerable though. The quiet part of blindfolds aside with the following solo is really, really good.

I agree that they have no restraint and that is indeed the hallmark of really good musicians, but having said that I think they are a good band, I saw them live late last year and they were really tight, vocalist was superb, and whilst they have honestly no idea when to stop wanking off, I appreciate their tight-as-fuck-ness.

As for the other band: LOLOLOL.

I'm not feeling that bass tone at all (especially during the slap bass parts) but I'm sure we can attribute that to the player

Some of those bits are atrocious, but I think they could sound good once you do your "clean up"

Seriously, why bother going crazy fixing stuff, the band are shit, move on.

I am 100% behind you wanting to do a professional job and doing the best possible job you can do but its not worth the pain and torture.

Just record it, accept payment and move on. A shit band needs to be told they are shit. Sorry, not the best solution but at least you keep your sanity

It already sounds a lot tighter then the other versions haha. The drums aint so bad either, but it's not even considered a mix i think so i'm curious for the end-result.

I can't even imagine what that bassplayer guy was thinking when he wrote (or most likely copied the guitarpart) the bass part. He is not really tight and it sounds way to chaotic because the part itself is so full of notes. FWIW I like a 'less is more' type of approach when it comes to write drums and bass, unless the part itself is really cool/suits the moment AND is played tight. And i don't think the bassguitar is locking well with the drums so to speak. That comes with experience i'm aware of that. I think he needs to relook himself in the mirror, and practice a hella lot more.

(Can i get an amen for that? :p)

i would rather hear a sloppy as fuck band that writes incredible fucking music.
clinical perfection in instrumental playing is all well and good for half hour, but after that i start craving something with more fucking substance.

if protest the hero actually wrote good music they could be as sloppy as they wanted to be and id enjoy them, but as it stands, they just write apalling music for the reasons i listed. and as far as Rody goes, the sound of his voice makes me want to vomit profusely, but that's just an IMO i suppose. I'd like to just say that it isn't my opinion and that he genuinely just fucking sucks and everyone else is wrong except me, but this most likely isn't the case. I respect his singing chops immensely, I don't respect how he uses them, and this frustrates me.

this clip is lolz.

and fuck no you cant get an amen on dissing the fact this kid is trying to write an interesting bass line. after having had the opportunity to spend 2 years of my life working with an incredible bass player who refused to just be in the background playing root notes, i feel sort of enlightened to the plight of the bassist, if you will.
we ended up with thrashy tracks with slap bass, and it worked perfectly because we made it work.
oh no, a musician is refusing to be condescended into playing root notes for the entireity of the album, call the fucking pigs, GOOD GOD MAN!
this band may suck ludicrous amounts of ass but i will be nice to the bassist purely because any attempt to put slap bass in a metal track is commendable IMO.
nobody else is practically forced into playing boring shit except the bassist, there's no reason for any bassist to sit there and take it. If the track calls for minimalistic bass, then it can have it, but these guys are obviously trying to be all "out there" and crazy and shit hot, so what they need is some slap bass.

Im sure the point that shalloweulogy was trying to make was that this bass player shouldnt be attempting anything but the roots due to him not having the ability to do otherwise?

oh yeah undoubtedly the guy's a fucking apalling player
just kudos to him for making the effort either way

correct me if im wrong, but i think there is way too much shit talk of clients on here, which i think is unprofessional. I think part of an engineers job is to stay relatively quiet about their clients and their talent (or lack there of)

of course it's our job to stay professional about it
but thats part of the beauty of this forum
you can come here and bitch to fuck about the horrible session you're doing in the knowledge that theres this sort of wink wink nudge nudge agreement that its banter between audio engineers
its only human to vent your frustrations if youve had a shit day on the job, yknow?
