I'm recording this band on Monday

That is quite simple to slap him : just show him one of your precedent mixes. He CANNOT say after that it sounds like what he has at home because that's fucking impossible, listening to the videoclip they made !

oh man, this thread has been great. if blogs were this amusing, maybe people would actually read them ;) thanks for sharing.

and i understand the mentality of not bashing bands etc, but i think that being able to vent and laugh about it later with colleagues is not only normal, but is probably the only thing that will help him keep his sanity and cool throughout it all. best of luck man, and thanks again for sharing! :kickass:

its still obvious as fuck these guys cant play or write for shit

i cant wait to hear the final mix dude haha. ill buy you an e-beer at the end of all of this

Here's what the second song sounds like at the end of day 6, this is the middle of the song. None of the tones are final. there's still some cleaning up to do on the newest guitar parts.

obviously not the same sound they can get at home.

That bit of music before it goes into the breakdown is actually pretty good. Obviously it's not a final mix, but yeah, there are things that can sound better, and I'm sure they will.

I have fast WIFI in the bedroom so I'm relaxed enough for story time. Hopefully I can remember most of it.

Day 5 - More bass, other guitars
The night before I was up until 3 am editing all the bass and guitars with Elastic Audio to get them perfectly in time. After nearly 7 hours of tracking Alexsei's guitars they were still way the fuck off time, really sloppy. So I'm feeling pretty shitty before it even starts.
We planned on an 11am start but we didn't start until about 1 because of a storm that morning. Nalan came at 1, Daniel came around 2. It was Nalan's day to finish the bass on the last two songs. By the time Nalan left at 5 we were finished the bass tracks and were working on guitars with Daniel.
Unfortunately Dan had broken a string and had no spares the day before, so we used my SG for whatever standard rhythm tracks we could until he had to go @ 7. Not as tedious recording Dan compared to Alexsei.

Dan and I get along really well, we've bonded over a few things like complaining about his band, making fun of the other guys especially Alexsei, I showed him Crabcore too. It was a productive but tiring day, take after take after take of guitars and bass at louder levels than I normally have if I'm alone.

I can't remember anything funny about this day

Day 6 - Guitars
I had a spare set of strings so I sold them to Dan to get his guitar ready for the next day. When he and Noah the singer arrived there was a problem. Those strings are a higher gauge than what his guitar is set up for. Normally this wouldn't be a big problem, but he has a floyd rose bridge and it was FUCKED because of the extra tension, the strings were WAY too high and wouldn't go into tune. We spent about an hour getting the bridge somewhat locked into a normal position by chopping up a mousepad and filling the space around the inside of the bridge so it hardly moves in either direction. In the end he was really happy with the result, he doesn't use the trem arm anyway.
We got a fairly large chunk of the guitar parts done, I think the first song is all done and the others are about half done. For these guys, it was a productive day, at this rate we'll be recording vocals by December :erk:.
To keep Noah busy I set up my laptop with MIDI controller and got him to browse the logic synths for sounds to replace his shitty Casio keys. He gave up after a while, because there's too many good sounds, which is true.
Whenever there was a bad take, I'd play Dan this sound, a couple of times I gave him a cookie when he was good. :)

Dan and Noah really liked what I did right before the breakdown in that clip I posted earlier, they'd never would have thought to do that. It's just all the tracks slowed down for 2 bars with Vari-Fi, an 808 kick stretched to fit two bars, then slowed down too. Then theres a reversed 808 and reversed cymbal speeding up. Pretty standard trick right?

We had a good laugh about Dan's part in the breakdown, he does some pinch & bends and it sounds like a donkey “Hee-Haw” I may actually layer some donkeys in there in the mix. Sad Tuba is probably getting to the final mix in one of the songs too whether they like it or not.

Oh yeah and Pro Tools was being a fucking bitch again that day, I think it's one of the Wrapped plugins I'm using, either TS secret or Wagner Sharp 2. Its so fucking annoying. Error message, It won't save, then won't exit. I end the process, trash prefs, wait ages for it to reopen check all the plugins, make new databases, then I open the session and NO MIDI will work. That means no drums and no click track. I've been through this so many times before I know to expect that. So exit and reopen and it will work fine....for a while.

To be continued

This shit is great
more guys on this forum should post little journals as they record bands, it makes for great reading

you deserve a medal jon

Omfg. its like a recording version of real world. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AUDIO ENGINEERS STOP ACTING NICE, AND ACT REAL. roflroflroflrf

Day 7 - Guitars
Sorry guys, nothing funny today.

Started out the day by finding some better sounds for the guitars and bass. Alexsei came over @12 and we went through all the songs to figure out what parts need to be done or redone, that was about 2 hours.
We're done most of Alexsei's guitar parts except for the 5th song.

We're doing vocals and keys tomorrow.

Day 8 - Vocals
After I posted story time for day 7, I decided to try that editing process where the bass parts just seem to correct themselves overnight. There was a part thats steady 16th notes and instead of wasting an hour hacking it together I just plugged in my bass and "fixed it manually".

Short day today, Noah had some problems with the buses getting here so he was late, like 1:30 and had to go at 5.

The first song is closest to complete so we started with that one for vocals.

I'm not sure if I explained my "booth" yet. I was given a couple wall partitions that are freestanding and about 7 feet tall. The top half is plexiglass. I have a little booth set up with the wider partition coming out from left of the room wall and another coming off that wall kinda in a wide U shape.-> |__/
I have thick blankets hanging over the top half of the partitions to deaden the sound some more and broadband panels on the concrete wall on the right. It blocks enough noise that we can track vocals with the air conditioner on, which is much nicer for me and my pets.

I don't have a big selection of mics suitable for vocals, so I set up a 3035 and SM58 on a stereo bar on the same stand getting them the same distance from the pop filter. I didn't know which one would sound better. He liked the sound of the 3035 more, brighter, more detail, but I decided to record both mics anyway. On the screaming parts we liked both mics at once with some distortion on the 58.

We started out by doing 3 takes through the song then we started discussing what could flow better, which words are unnecessary and how the delivery could be improved. Then we started to try to get a good take implementing the changes, and then doubling it.
His singing parts sound so wimpy, it's going to be a challenge to get them working in the mix. His screams and growls are decent, but the singing is not...great.
To be honest, I don't really know how I should track these vocals. If I should double it in stereo or dual mono. Or triple track it. Multiple tracks means more editing and probably spending at least an extra day doing vocals.
We kinda gave up on the song and then did a quick 1 take scratch vocal for the other 4 songs.

Oh yeah, we have to get all vocals done by next Thursday because he's going away. If the guitars and bass didn't take so long this wouldn't have been a problem but there is definitely going to be a compromise made to get them done on time.

After he left I went through all the drum tracks again and made sure they're all as good as they can be. BTW, for MIDI drums I like 10% swing and 85% strength but I make sure the start of each bar is dead on. There was another bass part I corrected too.

I'll post a quick mix once I get out of bed.

We will hopefully be done ALL guitars at the end of today. Alexsei better bring the fucking acoustic this time.
