I'm recording this band on Monday

its their own fault for being nosy bastards haha

I understand you're kidding, but still, that's absolutely bullshit. It doesn't matter how bad a band is, as long as they're paying like any other client, they should be treated in a professional and respecting manner. Imagine your personal trainer going on about you being a fat, lazy fuckbag on the local weightlifting forum.

For the record, i wasn't trying to diss the fella. True fact, i was very tired (get out of bed at 6:00 AM after 4 hours sleep, drive 2 hours, work 13 hours straight in a pretty hot theatre and drive 1 hour back) and i totally dislike the slapping bass part. So it got out a little more agressive/disrespecting than i intended to, sorry 'bout that.

My annoyance wasn't really that he tried to make an interesting part (still i don't like slap-bass in metal, but that's just me) but more that he couldn't really play it or having a hard time doing so, more or less overrating himself. I'm a musician with a "If i can't play it, i won't bother trying it" attitude, but that doesn't mean i cannot practice it, but only at home and i keep it pretty much to myself :) so people don't hear me fucking thins up. If it comes to show people my playing capabillities in playing shows and certainly during recording then i want perfection from myself. So it's more like a "know what you can and cannot do" type of thing. Hope this clears things up :)

There is no shame in telling someone they suck in this business. The trick is being able to make a player not suck when they leave your studio. That is what being professional is all about. They may suck when they get in on the first day but its your job to make them play better, however you choose to do that is up to you.

Dont feel bad about saying a band is shit. They are shit. Pure dog shit. But guarantee they will grow and develop as players enormously for doing this recording session. Then the next time they record they will be better. Nobody gets good at anything without sucking first. Its the nature of the beast.

I say good luck to em, they may be just doing it for fun aswell, if they are doing it for fun then its another story.

LOL, I'm a day late on this.

Day 3 - drums again
To recap, 5 songs are to be recorded, the first day we did MIDI drums for 3 of the songs, the second day we did bass for 2 of the songs (poorly), Day 3 was supposed to be catch up day.
On this day we were supposed to track the bass for song 3, track drums for #4 & 5 and get bass done for those so we can concentrate on Guitars on the next day.
We're now about 1 full day behind schedule. :/
It took 7 hours to record the last two songs with the drums, and I haven't even edited yet.
Didn't get any bass done.
The bassist did manage to drop my bass on the floor though. no dent or scratch but still

The main guitarist didn't come on day 3, the second guitarist Daniel did. He's by far my favorite of the bunch. He knows they suck and we can laugh about it now.

Paul (the drummer) had some classic dumbass moments. He's the best "character" in this story.
- He's always talking about how ECO friendly he is
- he bought a pair of shorts, he thought they said "GUN IT" and though that was cool (for some reason). We explained it said "G-UNIT" and he was really disappointed. I wish I could describe that better, it was hilarious.
- He only likes tiny cars, nothing heavier than a smart-car. After 2 hours of discussing WHY they're so much better than REAL cars we find out he can barely park. LOL
- Hybrid cars are worse for the environment because they're heavier than a regular car. Daniel smirks "So they're bad because they hurt the fucking ground?" I bust a gut laughing.
- it turns out he has no clue about rhythm timing, like what a quarter note is, what a BAR is.
- I explain there's a 1 bar count-in, so come in on the 5th beat. He says he understands, but you can tell he doesn't because it takes 3 tries.
- He uses the drumsticks that come with Rock Band (because reusing is Eco friendly)
- the batteries died on his Sony mp3 player (which he bought because it's made of more ECO friendly materials and has long battery life, usability be damned) after 3 weeks of use. He's been "too busy" to recharge it. I didn't want to hurt his brain with the idea of doing something else while the player charges, it may have been too much for him.
- To get home he had to take the bus to the subway, which is the easiest route imaginable, and it took him 20 minutes to write down the directions. (get on route 1 East, get off at Islington, last stop.)
- In Daniel's words, he's a fucking spaz, I really can't argue with that.

OK, so today (day 4) were doing bass again.

Oh yeah, I learned a lot more about the band yesterday, some things start to make sense, or at least I understand why they don't make sense.

I was listening to them talk about where they're from and what school they go to and stuff and I say "It's weird listening to you guys talk, it's like you barely know each other" And they really don't.
-These guys have been a band for about 3 weeks. :loco:
-2 of these songs were written about a week ago.
-They already have 2 music videos
-Alexsei writes all the music and the rest of the band hardly get time to learn it let alone discuss it.

-Paul and Alexsei don't watch TV at all, they read.
-Alexsei reads self-help books mostly "How to read a person's face and know what they're thinking" type stuff.
-Paul reads books on being Eco Friendly *cough, propaganda, cough*

hahaha
eco friendly
fuck that
we're all gonna die before the shit really hits the fan anyway
so fuck that, i say kill the environment to shit while we're here and fuck it up for the next generation
well, maybe not, but that guy isnt really doing anything that seems it'll help all that much
he could maybe.. y'know.. recycle?

ahaha you made my day ! I can't say what part is the most hilarious. The rock band stick part is so awesome. Also, "GUN IT / G-UNIT" is so fucking hilarious I almost spit my coffee, it's so ridiculous to arrive at that stade !

I still dont get why they wanted to charge a studio if they started the band 3 weeks ago ?

That's what they're all thinking besides Alexsei. Part of it is because they'll all be in school in Sept so this is kinda the only time they can do it. They practice a couple times a week, but they're really just practicing their mistakes, committing them to memory.

Hopefully I'm not around when this band implodes.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHahahahahaahaha, holy shit is that classic :lol::lol: And I'm pretty eco-friendly too, but I still loathe people who prance about preaching it to the world, what a fruitcake :Smug:

"- He uses the drumsticks that come with Rock Band (because reusing is Eco friendly)"

HAHAHAHAHAH oh my dogs.

at least the guitarrist don't think like the drummer.

They just left.

Day 4 - Guitars

Nalan came over today around 11:30 and we did bass on the 3rd song. Pretty uneventful. I had to raise the action on my bass to accommodate his poor technique. It seemed to help him to monitor from an amp while recording this time, we were going direct with headphones before. We did 3 takes of the whole song, I comped it, and then we fixed the remaining 2 parts. About an hour total.

Alexsei came over as we were finishing that and we started working on guitars for the first & second songs.
First song went fairly quickly, for this band at least, the second took several hours to get doubled parts throughout. The only way to get through it was to work a few bars at a time in loop and then comp. Every time he fucked up, he'd stop and explain how hard it is. Then he'd just start playing between takes as I'm checking and we have to stop him so we can move on. After a short Starbucks break he started complaining about the tone.

At one point they said it sounds like what they have at home. :erk: This didn't help my mood at all.

We got 2 songs and a bit of the third done for Alexsei's guitar parts. Pro Tools crashed 3 times in the last hour

I'm so annoyed right now.

Daniel and Nalan are coming tomorrow for 2nd guitar and hopefully making some progress on tracking bass. Can't be any worse than today.

:)
only without the unlimited budget.

It's just before 10am, just woke up, i feel like shit and I have pillow marks on my face. I was up until 3am getting all those guitar and bass parts in time with Elastic Audio. I think it sounds better.

Starting the next session in about an hour

Bleh, good luck dude, yesterday's sounded pretty rough (especially the little zinger about the sound quality, despite the fact that it's totally unmixed) - hope it picks up!

O man, that musta been the ultimate slap in the face...it sounds like what we have at home...At that stage i woulda lost it haha. Good luck just keeping the will to live!!
