Does anyone else notice that most death metal albums begin with some kind of wierd noises or a spoken word sample as an intro before the music kicks in? Why do you think this is? Maybe because crushingly heavy guitars and a fast beat right when the CD beings would be too abrupt and sudden for some people?

The intros to Vital Remains - Dechristianize and Massacra - The Final Holocaust is awsome.

Yeah, Let The Killing Begin is an excellent intro.....although very little of it's effectiveness is attributable to Vital Remains.

I don't know, there ARE so many of them that unremarkable ones can seem redundant, or just go unnoticed entirely....but I think its important therefore to consider such attempts at atmosphere or thematic validity or contrasting moods or whatever the intros happen to be there for within and only within the context of that album. Very difficult to do I know with metal music, but sometimes such tracks really will complement the music in some way....

Most often though, they seem to be just simple pieces who's presence is merely there to give contrast and make the opening music hit harder, or to establish an inquisitive mood of mystery (suitable to metal's individualistic emphasis) that then begins exploration with the music starting. In other words, a passage intended to 'open your mind'.

I wanna start a death metal album with a nice little acoustic guitar passage, then a sample of Marvin the Martian from Looney Tunes:

"Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-Shattering Kaboom?"

A nice instrumental song would be good for me to start off an album or just some weird sounds.

Strangely enough, I find that Morbid Angel's intros and other instrumental parts are among the more impressive and noticable of death metal, even though I don't like the band all that much. Then again, that might be because of the fact you know MA have a lot of conviction and are trying to shove that meaningfullness in there deliberately....as opposed to just for the sake of it.

I like the one on Blood Red's Throne's 'Affiliated With The Suffering' album. Short and sweet.
I wish you were dead. I wish you all were dead. Buried under ground, rotting, devoured by maggots. I wish you were dead. I wish you all were fucking dead! *BTR proceed to r0x0r*
