Please add some, I must have forgotten some...Recently I have looked back at a few old favourites which I recommend if you haven't heard them I say they are must-haves for any Death Metal fan. (In random order)

The first Death albums (of-course)
Cancer-Death Shall Arise
Massacre-From Beyond
Nocturnus-The Key /Thresholds
Obituary- Cause Of Death
Bolt Thrower- Warmaster
Carcass- Necrotisism Descanting...Heartwork

First Three Cannibal Corpses
Suffocation- Effigy
Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption
Immolation - Dawn Of Possession
Bloodbath- Resurrection Through Carnage
Fear Factory- Soul Of A New Machine

Disincarnate- Dreams Of A Carrion Kind

* Just to clarify , the list consists of the fully developed Death Metal sound so it doesn't include more pioneering bands such as Hell Hammer or Possessed etc.

Deicide - Deicide

Obituary - Slowly we Rot

Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten

Benediction - Grind Bastard and Transcend the Rubicon

Vital Remains - Let us Pray

All good albums.

True!!! Benediction- Transcend

Let Us Pray is a classic but didn't excite me much although everything was top notch especially the vocals I found that album a bit monotone ,as exciting as maybe Baphomet`s Dead Shall Inherit or Incantion -Onward To Golgotha.Loved it all though...

Early Benedictions are a must have ...

The first Edge Of Sanity albums are up there too but they were kind of inconsistent in parts where some riffs and songs out-shined others...
Disincarnate is a bit like that too though...The song Stench Of Paradise Burning is a masterpiece though!

Gorguts-Obscura
The Chasm-Deathcult for Eternity
At The Gates-The Red in the Sky is Ours
Notice how each line gets longer and longer-pretty cool huh

Nile - AotW
Vader - Litany, The Beast
Krisiun - AssasiNation
Akercocke - WTGU,DTGU
Angelcorpse - Of Lucifer and Lightning
Celtic Frost - Monotheist
Vital Remains - Dechristianize
Deicide - Scars and Stench

At The Gates-The Red in the Sky is Ours Great album now here is one I got to pull out of the dust,I saw them live on that tour with Napalm 1998 I believe it was.

Some good albums mentioned but none are Classic Death Metal really.

Autopsy - Severed Survival
Atheist - Piece of Time
Asphyx - Last One on Earth
Cemetary - An Evil Shade of Grey
Grave - Into the Grave
Impetigo - Horror of the Zombies
Malevolent Creation - Retribution/The Ten Commandments
Moondark - The Shadowpath
Therion - Of Darkness/Beyond Sanctorum

Plenty of other stuff I believe to be must haves, but I'll leave it at some of the classics every one on this board stuffs down newbies' throats.

The only albums I have seen that I haven't heard are from Master Yoda's two posts. Not sure if that means that there is a real consensus on some of the best death metal albums or anything though.

Lots of essentials posted already, most of these are fantastic.

Molested - Blod-Draum
Gorement - The Ending Quest
In Flames - The Jester Race
Soilwork - The Chainheart Machine
