Is mainstream music getting worse?

When I hear shit like "Show yo feet" or whatever the fuk that dude says on that song...

or Avril Lavigne's new song or any of that complete and utterly useless garbage on Top 40 stations etc...I would fully like to examine peoples tastes. And why they would choose to listen to such mindless and untalented stuff is beyond me.
Funny thing is that most of them think Im the asshole for listening to metal hahahah

There has always been really really shit mainstream music. Although My Humps probably set some sort of new benchmark.

Amen to that. A mate of mine once said 'Lovely lady lumps? She better get that checked out.'

Bloody horrible song.

I'm half-half when it comes to mainstream music getting worse. The real mainstream pop that you hear on the radio is pretty damn bad. Recycled trash, for the most of it. Most, if not all of the [Insert Country] Idol shows produce horribly generic drivel.

But when it comes to the more 'alternative' side, I think there's a decent few competent bands. I'd attribute that to the internet, really. Lots of unsigned bands getting a lot more exposure, allowing the big record companies access to a wealth of diverse bands. Also, home recording studios are a lot cheaper now, so there's hardly any reason why a band shouldn't have recordings online.

That's very very good and very very bad. The music scene is festering thanks to that. Before if someone released something it was because certain other people liked it, and now anyone can release stuff only THEY like.

I'd say that you can look at the picture the other way round and that a lot of undiscovered genuis has a chance now, but geniuses are few and retards without taste...well...it's just full of them.

The mainstream worse? Rap is making it worse but indie is making it better. It's always the same cycle.

You can never tell, sometimes music becomes mainstream because its actually appealing to many people, but most of it is just because people copy eachother and because the band is selling an image. Bring Me The Horizon for instance... shit music but seem to have fans everywhere and most of them dont like any other metal bands, its make me want to kick them to death.

You see its loads like " I like P!ATD, Fall out boy, Bring Me The Horizon, MCR etc... "

I don't find it to be getting worse. Go listen to some pop from the thirties and forties. Get some Frank Crumit songs and tell me that shit isn't ten times worse than Avril Lavigne.

Mainstream music has always mostly been bad...probably can't tell if it's getting worse or not, since it all sucks, but I hear it everyday from kids at my school singing Avril Lavigne's new song...

I strongly dislike mainstream music, and yes it is getting worse it seems. I remember growing up when rock was more or less mainstream in early to mid 90's, but then came the backstreet boys, nsync etc.

Well, every time I think mainstream music has hit rock bottom, something suckier comes along.

You sound like a try to be as dark a person as i can be person.

No mainstream music is not all bad. I am listioning to john mayer....i like him a lot in music wise hes great.

is there music being produced today and played to the masses via radio and MTV that you could consider the worst music you'll ever hear in your life? definitely. do I think it's getting worse as a whole? I don't. especially now with the internet becoming more and more such a great tool for artists with potential, selling your souls to giant life-sucking corporate record companies is no longer required to come into mainstream attention. (see: Arctic Monkeys) this can only mean good things for the future of mainstream music.
