Issue to discuss concerning Opeth and managment

that sucks dude

I saw Steve Vai last night and Eric Sardinez was supporting him, the dude stood at the merch stall after the gig for a fucking hour talking to people and signing stuff, you SHOULD NOT have to pay to meet a band...especially one you've followed since the beginning or bought all their albums

Then again the guys probably didn't have a choice in the album buying matter and they were probably real busy at the end

I have some sympathy with the whole corporate antics to be honest. It must be some american bullshit though cos when I saw the mighty Opeth in Manchester UK I met em afterwards and had a proper good chat, got shit signed and got pics with mikael. I had to wait an hour and a half but it was well worth it. Theres no way that Opeth would ignore a fan unless they had to for whatever reason. They are fucking top lads and Mike is like the most chilled and coolest dude ever.

Smells like gay american RR contractual issues are the reason for your shitty experience dude. But don't fucking cry about it, and don't say you are never gonna see em again. Make it happen. Go to their next show and wait near tourbus after and you will likely meet em. You were unlucky first time but don't let that stop you meeting your heroes.

why do people feel they need an autograph or feel the need to meet the band?

Similar reasons to why one might be compelled to post on their official forum, I'd imagine. The need to know more and dig deeper, get behind the music, get to know the people involved in the project, why and what prompted them to write and perform the music etc.

Then there's of course those questions that everyone has and there's nothing better than asking the band in person what the answer to thoseis. Doesn't help that whenever you meet those people, those questions tend to just fly out of your head and leave a vacant space, prompting 'uhhh, ahhh, YOU ROCK' and subsequently after they've gone 'FUCK! I FORGOT TO ASK...'.

Not sure about autographs. I suppose those are a way to keep tabs of all the bands one has seen/met. I personally preffer photos.

Alright, I got back from the Dallas show this morning and I am not happy. The show was great, but certain situations arose that I would like to bring to everyones attention. I had purchased my tickets about three weeks before the show on Opeths site through the pre-sale. I didn't bother bring my confirmation email, figuring that I wouldn't need it. Well, my friend and I got there and were one of the first few people in line. Once they separated the line for will call tickets the shit began to hit the fan. Most of the people who had tickets on will call were not on some 'list' that they had. Then some how they were let in. Maybe because they found their names, I don't know. When I got to me, he said that I wasn't listed. So, he (a worker of the venue) had my friend and I stand aside, while other people on will call and other people who didn't even have tickets got in before we did. We had to stand there and wait until most of the will call people passed us and went inside. The venue worker for some reason said we could go in. Because we got in later than we were supposed to, we didn't get the spot we wanted in the front. Now, my problem isn't really with what spot I got, it lies in the disorganization with whom ever runs the tickets sales through that site. That was just a small issue compared with what happened next. I went to the merch table and purchased a shirt, I then proceeded to ask what was going on at a table next to the merch. The guy, Fye worker, said that if I purchased Ghost Reveries that I could get it autographed by the band. I told the guy that I already own the album because I bought it the day it came out, but wanted an autograph anyway. Then this jackass told me tuff, that if I wanted the bands autograph I'd have to buy the album. I then asked him what's the point of having to buy the album if I already have it? What am I going to do with an extra copy? Being a cooperate bitch he replied, "You can take your first copy and go to Fye and trade it in for something else or give it to a friend." I then told him that this whole situation was nothing but cooperate bullshit and walked off. After the show, they formed a line for the autographs. If anyone was in line who didn't purchase the album there, had to get out of line. They made it mandatory to purchase the album to get the autograph. I'm a dedicated Opeth fan, I bought the album the day it came out, I shouldn't have to buy it again just to get a f**king autograph. So I said screw it and my friend and I went outside to the tour bus. Once they were done signing autographs they came out and proceeded to get on the bus. I called out Peter and Mikael, but they just ignored me and got on the bus. Have Opeth stooped so low that they don't care about their fans enough to sign an autograph even if they didn't buy an album at the show? They were asking $20 for the cd, you know what? I spent $30 on a tour shirt, that should give me enough reason to get an autograph. The way I look at it, I shouldn't have to purchase a damn thing in order to get a signing. I am extremely disappointed with Opeth and probably won't be seeing them in concert anymore. They put a bad taste in my mouth that won't be going away any time soon. I guess that the switch to Roadrunner made them official 'rockstars' and they don't have to give two shits about the fans, only when they pay more money will they do anything. In retrospect, I saw them about two years ago in OKC. After the show, they came outside in the rainy cold weather, were extremely kind guys, and signed autographs until everyone got one. And guess what, no one had to pay a dime. And wouldn't you know it, that was after Deliverance and Damnation were released and, surprise, surprise, those two were released on Koch records. Coincidence, I don't think so.

Anyway, I went to the Opeth signing in Vancouver and they seemed pretty great, maybe you just caught them on a bad day? After all they all are only human as well.

It sucks when your perception and memory of what should have been a great day was a bad one.

It is hard to comprehend sometimes that you're not the only person in the world. I've had several experiences like that which have left a sour taste in my mouth. In hindsight I've come to realize there was nothing personal against me, and that there is usually an explanantion (and not always a negative one like the belief Opeth is too big for their fans).

When it comes to autographs and concerts, I find it all gravy. What matters most to me is the music I listen to every day, and good bands (Opeth my #1) provide countless enjoyable listening moments. If I'm lucky enough to go to a concert, great. If I happen to meet and talk to a band member and maybe get an autograph, great. But not having those will not deter me from good music, never.

By the way, I do agree that having to purchase a CD you already have just to get an autograph isn't right. It's wrong to be penalized for supporting your band at the wrong time. But , that extra $20 to purchase that extra CD does help the band in some way (we all know RR gets quite a cut first and the band nets a much smaller amount). But not everybody can afford an extra $20 CD, and some can't even afford one CD. This isn't selling out, but it's a sign they do have a larger following, and it will become increasingly difficult to please the fans (outside of their music) as they've done in the past.

your opinion seems to be evolving and slowly getting crushed.

you're suffering from the whole "punk rock" syndrome.

you find a band.. you fall in love with the band.. the band is yours.. you wonder why everyone else doesnt think this band is the greatest.. the band finds sucess down the road.. everyone starts liking your band.. the people who like the band don't deserve to like the band.. you say the band has "sold out" or become "rock stars".. you get upset with your band.. you cry. the end.

in the words of one Maynard James Keenan "We sold out LONG before you ever heard our name".

Man you don't listen very well. I didn't give a shit about meeting the band. It's the whole thing about how it's being run and the attitudes given by the people running it.

i was out there after the show as well. there was a guy and his girl, two young guys(one blonde with glasses and his friend), and i was the guy with glasses, brown hair, a ghost r. shirt. Were you the one with shoulder length dark hair who was with a group of guys? if it's you, then i have something to tell you. After you guys left, I stuck around longer. Another guy I had met came out from the autograph session(he bought a CD) and we walked back to his car. He was kinda drunk and decided afterwards he was going back to wait. I followed him. By that time there were only two guys left there, and one left. After about 15 min. the third guy asked one of the techies(whatever they are) if the band was gonna come out. He said he didn't know but that they were gonna go have a drink at a bar down the street, but that we didn't hear that from him. The band eventually came out and went to the bar. I was like dazed so I just followed one of the 3 guys i was with. To wrap this up, one of the dudes i was with bought them a round of drinks, and we met them all, and I spent like 20-30min. talking to martin mendez, who by the way said that the whole 'autograph session' thing is Roadrunner, not them. He actually expressed a bit of displeasure in being obligated to have these autograph sessions after an exhausting 2 hour show. Basically, Mikael seemed a bit serious, kinda tired, just wanting to calm down physically/mentally, but the bassist was super nice, as well as the guitarrist, who actually gathered the guys when I asked if i could take a pic with my old SLR(no flash, came out grainy as hell) camera. Eventually, the bar closed up and we all left, and as they were getting on the bus they said goodbye, and the guitarrist even shook my hand(instead of me shaking his hand) like 5 times. I was very surprised by their genuine kindness and respect for us after probably wanting to just be left alone to relax. I don't know enough about how this whole band/record label thing works in terms of control, but I'm gonna go ahead and give the band the benefit of the doubt. Hey, they could have told us to go F* off at the bar, they didn't. Yeeeaah, they could have at least waved 'hi' when you were still there, but, who knows.

Yeah that's cool, but I'm not 21 (considering the bar) and I'm not saying that it's their fault. I know the guys are genuinely nice and easy going. I'm just criticizing RR and their management.

Need I say more? I wouldn't care if they had been like, "We're exhausted let's not do a signing tonight." But they couldn't because of RR. That just goes to show how great Opeth really are, they're willing to do a signing even though they didn't want to. My problem is with RR and the people running everything. So, everyone who thinks I'm trying to cream Opeth, calm down; I've got nothing against 'em.

I'm going to clear something up while I'm at it. I'll admit, I was pissed off in my first post so I didn't exactly think everything through. But my point still stands that RR sucks.

Now, the above quote was me just trying to make sense of the whole situation. I didn't know if it was the band, which would have been extremely uncharacteristic of them, or if it was RR. Now I understand that it was RR and therefore can direct my displeasure towards them. And obviously I'm not the only one here who disagrees with being forced to make a purchase. All it is, is another company using someone else to make more money for them.

I agree with you about RR man. Basically, what I heard from them was that they just want to have more people discover their music. I guess it comes at a price: RR and their 'things'. They're trying not to care about negative talk about 'sell out'/RR comments, etc. In fact, martin was wearing a shirt that said 'sold out' haha. I totally understand how they feel. If I were them, I would surely want more people to know about the music I work hard at? They're smart, they know all that comes with signing with that big a record company. I guess they feel the pros outweigh the cons. They said that as long as their music isn't affected, they're fine with it. Maybe they're just taking advantage of a moment to perhaps springboard to something better...at which time they can ditch RR, which I know they would. It seems as though they have their eyes open to everything that happens, just in case something fishy starts happening with regards to RR. Maybe i'm just assuming some things, but that's the feeling I got from talking to them.
So yea, RR sucks, well just have to keep supporting them and suck it up and deal with RR. Finally, just like you're doing, we should voice our concerns about issues whenever we feel their music, etc. might be threatened. I have faith that everything will be fine...i hope ha ha.

Hello guys!

After seeing this post I took action and ordered our tour manager as well as FYE that everybody get's their stuff signed regardless if they've bought something or not. Frankly I did not know that you had to buy something in the first place which I too think is outrageous. Anyways, I'm very sorry for that but now it's fixed and the Houston signing session had everybody in line regardless. We're not greedy bitches and I'll plead an end to that suggestion now, OK!? Obviously Roadrunner want the sales up and this is the effect so I've dealt with it personally.

On the second note, people yelling out for our names will not always get what they want. I don't remember hearing someone yelling out for me in Dallas + I'd figured everybody got their stuff signed inside + I probably had something else I needed to attend to. I also want to stress out that we're not your property in any way, you do not control us to that extent that you'll get whatever you ask for. We usually take care of everybody as you know but sometimes there are other stuff we need to do. You can't believe the amount of people who want to get to us and that showers us with work all the time so at times things screws up. However, I'm genuinely sorry for this and hope that you do go to the next show and we'll take care of ya.

Anyways, thanks for your support and for venting important (finally) issues on this message board! Cheers friends

(dude, im quoting the great Mikael Akerfeldt, Im so giddy with excitment I could vomit)

I think that there sorta prooves Opeth arent too big for their fans. The fact that he took time out of his busy schedule to clear this issue up. While it is unfortunate that you got screwed around like that, it seriously shouldnt matter. As foremention, music is about the music, not getting an autograph, or getting a picture of you and Mike posing. I have never been to an Opeth concert in my life (shit, I want too though) so I dont really know how it feels to get that sort of treatment from your favorite band (even though its obviously not intentional) but I still stand by what I, and a few others have said. Music is about music.

Take care Mike :)

hmm...i have a feeling this isn't the real Mikael Akerfeldt. I remember him personally posting under his name with the circle thing above the A (forgot what its called). Also his join date was something like feb 2001. But who knows, the format of the reply as well as this response seems to be right...

Exactly. If you have a username that has one (or many) of the swedish characters (åäöÅÄÖ), it's not easy to log on with an american keyboard. It's not impossible to do, but the easiest thing you can do is to create a new user without the special characters.

Yea, so Mikael, Ummm why have you joined in October 2005, and your name has been spelt wrong. It doesnt have the usuall 'a' that its spelt with and that it says it spelt with in the FAQ.

Thanks for doubting. I have bought a laptop on this tour in the US but obviously it's missing out on 3 important Swedish letters so I had to create another account in order to reply to this thread.

Confusing maybe, but it is indeed me!
Cheers
Mike

That's real awesome for him to set something up like that. I thank him on behalf of the rest of the fans...because when I went to gigantour, dream theater I guess disallowed themselves to do the "buy n' greet" thing. I guess they had their reasons.. unless they were pretenious. Maybe petrucci was too tired of getting all those "which scales did you play in this song, this song...and that song?" questions. ;)
