I've finally heard the new Slipknot (insert You Gonna Get Raped pic)

Sorry for not lying and saying the album is "shit" so I can fit in. After all that would make me cool. Expressing my own opinion is unjustified.

Well then I'm sorry for not lying and saying that Slipknot is shit so that I can fit in as well, because its quite trendy to do so. I guess we're in the same boat, brother.

I have no problem with people not liking Slipknot either...only when people try and lump every fan of Slipknot into some 'maggot' category that listens to Linkin Park or something. I guarantee you there is a lot of closet metal fans who are just too afraid of looking 'poser' by saying they are an ok band. I'm not sure I can say the same thing about St. Anger...

I don't care what Slipknot sounds like now, they are trendy faggots!

Like I said in my post on the first page, I think it's quite strange how Slipknot changed from nu-metal to "metalcore" or whatever they may be considered now just as soon as real metal and hardcore/metalcore are getting more mainstream success.

yeah.... its kinda like how Darkthrone are trendy faggots as well. they had their death metal sound then changed into ultra-raw black metal because it was the cool thing to do at the time

sarcasm off: first of all, the new slipknot sounds nothing at all like these so called "trendy metalcore" bands you speak of, which aren't even metalcore, you people just have no fucking clue what metalcore is, (kinda like how people are always bitching about how "you don't know what black metal is") you just hear that there's some "trend out there called 'metalcore'", shit, better bash it for its popularity.... if you've actually heard the new slipknot you'd realize that. but i guess its more comforting to be bashing the "new trends", right? hell, if death metal became popular, it would instantly be labeled "trendy music for faggots" with your people's attitudes... because its simple.... its the metalheads' attitude to bash whats popular.

I knew someone would mention Darkthrone...

Anyway, I had metalcore in quotes when calling slipknot that style. Since I am one of those "you don't know what BM is" people I do see your point about hating metalcore when my only knowledge on the style is the semi-mainstream bands.

The reason (for me) to bash mainstream bands is because being more mainstream (usually) means attaining some kind of shit attitude and idealogy, and also coincidently the more popular a band gets the more shitty the music becomes (not always, but is often the case).

As far as i'm concerned, most 'mainstream' bands outside of rap, dance and teeny pop have far more intelligent and mature ideas to communicate than the vast majority of metal bands. 'Ideology' is a pretentious mask and pseudo-justificatory label that is in actuality practically non-existent in metal.

'(usually)' ' (not always, but is often the case)' and there, in your own words, is the very reason why it is idiotic for you to bash the mainstream, where 'bash' is obviously connotative of a rash, unjustified assault on something from a typically uneducated position.

Cant anybody just accept the fact that some of us that listen to real music actually think the new slipknot isnt bad and that it doesnt deserve bashing?

The vast majority, perhaps, because the vast majority are aiming for practically the same thing as most 'mainstream' bands.

Every person has a reason for making music. So every band has an ideology or mindset, of some sort, whether it's simply to earn a living, or to capture the Pagan spirit. There is meaning behind all music, the value of that meaning and its execution is what counts.

I bash the vast majority of mainstream bands because their music is written to appeal to the simian masses, thus it is devoid of complexity and thought-provocation.

Nicely stated.

GoD, you make a bloody good point.

As far as I can tell, Slipknot are in the same boat as good old Phil Anselmo. He couldnt handle being called 'soft' or 'trendy' by extreme metal fans, so he decided to be realy tough and hardcore and extreme... so he delivered Viking Crown, and fucked off from Pantera... all because he couldnt handle being called soft.

Slipknot are doing the same... they cant handle being called posers and fake metallers, and they cant cry home to their mothers, because that wouldnt be metal. So they try to convince real metallers that they're extreme.

Rant over.

Slipknot isn't trying to be "extreme" and show how "true metal" they are. They are only diversifying themselves. Lots of acoustic guitars, incoporating more Led Zeppelin/Sabbath style beats, even some middle eastern influences, string sections... I think it would be more accurate to say they are trying to get more progressive, while still maintaining a level of aggression. I don't think they are trying to prove anything, other than making music that they and Rick Rubin were feeling.

Also on this record, some of the most sinister sounding stuff they have on here, is some of the more mellow stuff - like "The Virus of Life".

Duality has grown on me, but overall I've lost faith in the band.

Duality is one of the weakest songs on the album to tell you the truth, clearly the 'single'. After I heard Duality and Pulse of the Maggot, I really had little interest in this record. Like I said before, the 14 songs together actually deliver something pretty interesting, if anything I am a fan of Rick Rubin and his influence is very clear.

Worth a listen before cast away, at any rate.

Yeah, thats right... the only reason people either hate or love the new slipknot is because of their high profile.

Lots of stuff I'd rather get before getting the new Slipknot.
