Because I don't want to be told to use the 'search' button when I make my own drummer vs drummer thread. Plus, it was an interesting thread that I hadn't participated in. So kill me.
Well, it's no fun with 5+ pages threads.

you can't really overplay if you're playing in dream theatre

two things....it is "dream theater"
when fates warning called them "dream theatre" on their liners...dream theater responded with "fatez warning"

Impossible for me to vote because you can vote for one of the other but for different reasons, which leaves it too open for me. I guess, I'd be able to vote if there was a Portnoy Vs. Lopez Skill Poll and a Lopez Vs. Portnoy Feel, enjoyability, originality, etc. Poll.

As many people have said, Portnoy for skill, Lopez for other things. I agree, so I can't vote on this

Hey Newbie here to this board but I was pointed here from a drummer forum, and being a decently schooled drummer and fans of both and having an un-biased opinion I thought I would give my two cents on the topic, Lopez is good yes, and Portnoy is good yes, but there are some things that can push this eitherway, but some things I have heard that I thought were kind of rude towords the Portnoy camp is that he plays with out emotion and that Lopez is better technicaly (quoting the drummer who started this) well if you listen to a song like "A Change of Season" thats all emotion on portnoys part thats a song about losing his mother of course its going to have emotion in the drums and that creates the intensity of the song is emotion, also I would like to point out that its not all two and fours hes doing with his hands its any number of strokes and he realizes that he does not use any rudiments outside of single stroke, but even with that he was named the 29 greatest drummer of all time by a panel of the worlds best drummers in Modern Drummer, and for Lopez, he is very good what he does but he is much more of a support player which is a normality of drummers unless the music calls for it to be otherwise (Primus, Dream Theater, Rush ect..) and he is very laid back player compared to some one like Portnoy who kills him slef over perfecting playing, improve wise I also have to give it to portnoy if you have heard the LTE albums you also know that they were made in 4 day each, I prefer Portnoy as a player but there are so many drummers that amazing players and we should just respect them all and not have cheesey discutions such as this.

Basically it's not fair to compare any drummer to Mike Portnoy in terms of technical skill, he's just out of this world.

Definitely not "showing off", he just as easily does a basic 1/4 beat where it fits. Just listen to their last album, pretty basic stuff for their standards.

But Lopez is great too, I like his style, especially on the Damnation tour he performed great.

I'd have to go with Portnoy on this one. I like Opeth far more than Dream Theater regardless... I used to be a DT fanatic back in high school but DT's evolution (or devolution) as well as my evolution as a music listener have made me forget about DT almost completely. But purely on a technical level... I gotta give it to Portnoy. He just needs a better avenue to showcase his skills. LTE and OSI are great side projects, but I think Portnoy could use a whole new batch of musicians to work with, rather than the usual prog showoffs.

Not to mention... Dream Theater could use a new goddamn singer! LaBrie might have sounded great in 95, but he sounds like shit in 04!
