I know there's a bunch of people here who play and we talked about this briefly in social so this thread is for talking about the game and maybe also for setting up online matches.

Speaking of which I'll play anyone over Magic Workstation.

I play Magic every now and then - usually either with other people's cards or on this old-ass computer game. I'd be up for some online Magic dorkery sometime, though I'm more of a casual player. How does Magic Workstation work? Do you have to pay for subscriptions or cards or anything?

edit: wow, there's a lot fewer posts here now than there were a minute ago

No, it's totally free.

You download it, download the packet holding the info on all the cards, and it has a library, you can make decks, and play with them. You can download scans of all the cards separately, which I recommend because the art is sexy.

Cool. Yeah, I'm gonna be busy for the next few days probly, but I'll let you know when I catch the fevah.

By the way, you're a computer wiz type. I need to open port 6667 to connect to the server with workstation. To do that I need to get past my router (a Linksys BEFSR41), but I don't know the password. I found some sites saying the default was no username, pw admin, but that didn't work. Any ideas?

Eh, well if you don't know the password I guess you'd either have to reset the router or ask Linksys what the default is for your model (if it wasn't actually changed by whoever set it up). To reset the router, there should be a little pinhole on it somewhere that you'd stick a pin into, and then you'd have to go through all the installation crap again.

I'd be up for a few games. Once I get a deck going and everything.

I'm a very casual player, so I'm not all that good. Not even close to where I know about series and all of that shit.

I haven't really played in a while either.

I've been going through the cards that have been released since I played regularly. There have been about 20 sets. I think I'll be playing legacy for a while.

That said, I've found some neat combos and stuff.

If anyone wants some basic info on general game-theory (not card-specific stuff but general strategy that makes you a better player without being really dorky), check out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering_deck_types
Describes the basic deck types. If you want to put together a deck, figure out which kind you want and what it should do.

Introduces card advantage.

I'm happy to talk about that stuff too.

I used to play... gave it up when I became too strapped for cash. I still have alot of my stuff though. My fully loaded Tooth and Nail deck was always fun to play... Trike + 'Dross Vampire be killin all ur creatures... or Darksteel Colossus and Spirit of the Night break your face.

man I had a deck but I really never played with it except for with friends, I was more into yugioh.

I learned/played Magic for the first time like two weeks ago. I used to play YuGiOh with my son, and sometimes at the store at weekly tournaments and stuff. But when he stopped, I decided it would be best if I didn't show up by myself, being old and all.

Anyway, Magic seems cool. I still prefer Yugioh, but that's only after trying Magic a few times.

What the fuck does EverQuest have to do with magic and DnD? It's a MMO.

pretty sure one of the latest expansions basically introduced Magic as a sidegame in Everquest.

I've played on and off (mainly Magic online) for a while. Me and my mates do a couple of drafts a year, usually during our week of nerdyness in the summer. I like it, still destroy people with my Elf deck.

Trike + 'Dross Vampire be killin all ur creatures

That's a sweet combo, but it gets better.

and then you add:

First if you want kill all the opponents creatures. But the way this works is: Triskelion targets itself, Mephidross Vampire gives it a counter, and Doubling Season gives it a second. It loops until there are a billion counters, then you kill the opponent.

My best deck was a red/black deck that relied on nightmares and land destruction to win. It wouldn't go anywhere in a tournament but it did well against my friends and was a lot of fun to play. It might be worthwhile to put it together on magic workstation.

I draft every Wednesday and Friday at a local store that has "pro tour" players. Very competitive atmosphere and lots of fun.
