Martin Mendez= Kickass Bassist

I agree. Mendez is a good bass player. Most of the songs on BWP really showcase his skills.

Sure, he's good.... but he doesn't play very fast, and there are a lot of better Bass Players.

He's more than adequate for Opeth. Not exactly workout material for a bass player. But I must say, his fingers looked quite busy playing some Morningrise songs live.

Well, no shit. But I'm talking style, man! His countermelodies and fills are great. I don't think he cares to play the more knowns forms of prog like Dream Theater- Martin is great because he knows when to play and when not to play.

That's the great thing about Opeth. None of the members are "shredders" or "speed demons" on their individual instruments. They're all about songs and feel. I couldn't care less how fast a player is if the music is shit.

Martin's Basslines are gorgeous. He has a great feel for the song (even though I'm sure a lot of it is collaboration between he and Mikael).

I think the same could be said for Mike's lead playing and Lopez's drumming.

It's art not athletics!

Peter too.

Mendez is just the most amazing presence at the live shows though. You can tell he's just "in the moment" and feeling the songs at every gig you see him at. Almost any other bassist would be a huge letdown at a live show.

nope i saw a bootleg where they play it and its peters

i mean the incredible melody line and then the picked sweeps and such

melody:

G: 4--4--6--4--6--7--7-- B string: 6 G string: 9--7--9--10-- B 10--11--8--10

edit: i dunno how to write tabs here

Yeah exactly, he has the perfect feel for the music. I'm sure he could play massive solo's like Jaco Pastorius and Doug Keyser if he wanted to, but there's no need for it these days. Didn't Mikael get sick of Johan DeFarfalla's showyness on Orchid and Morningrise?

Yeah that would be interesting, it's not really happening all that much anymore unfortunantly. Hey if you're into Cynic, Atheist, Death and all that, I strongly recommend the band Alarum, they're from Australia, and they're being hailed as the new Cynic. They're damn good, probably one of the most technical bands around today, extremely good bass player.
