Metal sub-genres

Cradle of Filth is not black metal. However, a large amount of black metal influence can be found on their first album (The Principle of Evil Made Flesh).

Dimmu Borgir plays an evolved, extreme form of black metal. However, indeed their first two albums are true black metal.
- Let's not forget about Emperor. Face it, even "Anthems..." despite its greatness leans heavily on the "Extreme Metal" side. Though "tr00 kvlt" know-it-all fans will never admit to this.

And the vast, vast majority of black metal does not contain guitar solos.

So you're saying early BM wasn't.... extreme? :err:

"Extreme metal" is the style of music that is now commonly associated with bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir. It has nothing to do with being "extreme."

Your posts are extreme.

Cradle of Filth was NEVER black metal. It was UK british reaction to extreme scandinavian scene.
Principle was death metal with keyboard and melodies.
Other stuff you can clearly describe like extreme gotic metal.
Older albums have some BM riffs, but that doesn´t do the genre.

@dEaThToFaLsEmEtAl34: you think that one of the main elements of black metal are solos and that CoF played black metal and call yourself "dEaThToFaLsEmEtAl34". Don´t you think that you are hilarious?

CoF's Principle album is certainly not death metal. (Exteme) Gothic Metal is probably a most accurate desciption of the type of music they play. And you're right, it was the Uk's reaction to Scandinavian black metal.

I never said that solos were a main element of black metal I'm just saying that they DO exist in black metal. There's no denying that CoF's early stuff was black metal. The only difference is the production didn't completely suck. If you're extremely picky than you won't see that CoF wasn't, at one point, black metal. Go ahead flame the shit out of me.

Umm...extreme metal tends to refer to death and black metal in general. Sometimes people use the term for ambiguous albums.

You said: "With no solos and nothing more complicated than 3 string chords it therefore should not be considered metal."
And NONONONONONO CoF is not Black Metal and never was...even n00bs know it.

Yes, I know. But the the reference I was making was indeed in regards to those ambiguous albums.

Yeah well nu-metal has NO solos, ever, and some faggot rapping in the background. Listen to nu-metal and compare it to black metal and tell me what's more metal.

The first CoF album indeed has a "black metal" sound to it mixed with heavy gothic influence. It is black metal? That depends on the listener's point of view and what they deem to be black metal. I could care less, in fact that is my absolute favourite album.

However, I wouldn't exactly say their next releases continued in this fashion. I wouldn't say Vempire, Dusk, or Cruelty were black metal though maybe they do contain somewhat of an influence. And the next few releases are not at all even close to black metal.
