Vempire & Principle were BM. Some of it, at least. "Rape And Ruin Of Angels" is cool. Early COF to post-"Cruelty" COF is like old Metallica vs. new Metallica.

Cradle of Filth is not black metal. However, a large amount of black metal influence can be found on their first album (The Principle of Evil Made Flesh).
Dimmu Borgir plays an evolved, extreme form of black metal. However, indeed their first two albums are true black metal.
- Let's not forget about Emperor. Face it, even "Anthems..." despite its greatness leans heavily on the "Extreme Metal" side. Though "tr00 kvlt" know-it-all fans will never admit to this.
And the vast, vast majority of black metal does not contain guitar solos.

"Extreme metal" is the style of music that is now commonly associated with bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir. It has nothing to do with being "extreme."

Cradle of Filth was NEVER black metal. It was UK british reaction to extreme scandinavian scene.
Principle was death metal with keyboard and melodies.
Other stuff you can clearly describe like extreme gotic metal.
Older albums have some BM riffs, but that doesn´t do the genre.

The first CoF album indeed has a "black metal" sound to it mixed with heavy gothic influence. It is black metal? That depends on the listener's point of view and what they deem to be black metal. I could care less, in fact that is my absolute favourite album.
However, I wouldn't exactly say their next releases continued in this fashion. I wouldn't say Vempire, Dusk, or Cruelty were black metal though maybe they do contain somewhat of an influence. And the next few releases are not at all even close to black metal.
