Metal sub-genres

For the last goddamned time, Viking Metal is no longer a sub-genre. It's well-enough established on its own by now thank you very much.

Viking Metal IS a subgenre of metal, however, not a sub-sub-genre of black metal as it once was.

That's what I was getting at.

Back when Enslaved and maybe a little bit of Unleashed (and of course Bathory) were the only bands who even contemplated playing the style, it was really just an offshoot of black metal.

By the late '90s, it had become a full-fledged style, incorporating tons of folk & pagan/heathen themes & melodies. Today, there are probably almost as many bands playing the style as straight black metal bands.

Thyrfing is a viking metal band.
Moonsorrow is a viking metal band.
Falkenbach is a viking metal band.

etc., etc., etc.

Equilibrium, Ensiferum, Gjallarhorn, Glittertind, Ancient Rites, Einherjer, etc. Yeah, Fredy_Brown, it is a legit genre and well if you don't like it than too bad really.

Thrash isn't even close to dead, you clown.

And now you think Viking is only a lyrical style? You don't know a whole lot, do you?

Somebody's getting a little testy over a minor statement that many would agree with me on.

I don't think it is, but I don't think it should be considered a genre in itself. I think it should be considered a lyric style like gore or epic. I feel the same way towards people who classify black metal solely on stage appearences and lyrics. Using that logic, Cradle of Filth is black metal. Music should be classified by sound not aesthetics.

IT IS CLASSIFIED BY SOUND, you fucking dolt.

edit: and if I appear testy, it's because I am continuously shocked at the level of idiocy that runs rampant in GMD

No, and I don't consider Amon Amarth to be a viking metal band. Before you go making ASININE statements - too late, you've made 3 already in this thread - DO YOUR FUCKING HOMEWORK.

Amon Amarth = melodic death metal, sings about vikings
Thyrfing = viking metal

You really a fucking moron.

You act as if only your opinion matters. I have met dozens of people, and some on this site who classify Amom Amarth as Viking metal.

You are the truest embodiment of an asshole. You start throwing out slurs and flames over a slight disagreement in classifying sub-genre's. Do you get like this with your mom when she tells you to finger her with your right hand instead of your left?

Your from Jersey, of course it doesn't.

It's YOU ARE, commonly shortened to you're. Not YOUR. You fucking moron. Clearly you should be paying more attention in class, and not arguing with someone who is obviously your intellectual superior.

Ahhh - this raises the question. Is 'Nu-metal' metal?

I would say no.

You forgot a few obvious ones such as thrash and doom. After then of course we start breaking these basics into millions of sub-sub-genres!
yes nu-metal is metal since obviously its called nu-METAL...and Nu metal is a genre that began in the mid 1990s. It typically fuses influences from the grunge and alternative metal of the early 1990s with hip-hop, electronic music and various heavy metal styles in varying degrees and quantities

I highly doubt Amon Amarth is real viking metal. More like Headbangers Ball Metal.
