Metal World Cup
I guess I could see someone voting for Finland but the US just has soooo many bands of different styles that are pioneers and/or really great. They win on numbers alone.
I voted for US as well, but I think someone could make the case for Finland over US by pointing out that while the US has produced many great bands, it has also produced more crap than any other nation: hair metal, nu metal, groove metal, metalcore etc.

I don't think Finland has a strong enough canon to sell that argument, but it is one the US will have to face against a stronger opponent.

Sweden vs. France
Norway vs. Germany

United Kingdom vs. Italy
USA vs. Finland

I figured Finland and USA would meet in the finals, but now the only hard choice left is Sweden Vs Norway..

EDIT: I'm the only one who voted Finland? Old-school Finnish Death Metal is only the greatest genre of metal to have ever existed.

Knockout Stage- Semifinals:

Now we get down to the business end of the tournament. Two classic match ups: the Revolutionary War and the Scandinavian classic. Vote for your favorite between the two countries by bolding the country's name. Final votes must be in by Tuesday at 5 PM Pacific. You may change your votes between now and then. Feel free to lobby for nations.

Sweden vs. Norway
United Kingdom vs. USA

vs. USA

I most definitely need more time to think about UK vs. US. UK is more top heavy (Priest, Maiden and Sabbath alone is hard to overcome). However, there's not a ton of great stuff from the past 25 years or so. The Peaceville doom metal is the only thing that immediately strikes me as standing out.

USA, on the other hand, has WAY more depth and way more sustained success over time, but has also produced most of the worst metal in the history of the genre, including hair metal, nu metal and metalcore.

Sweden

UK

The first round that I know enough about the countries involved in order to be able to vote. I absolutely love the US metal scene, but no one topples Priest and Sabbath.

I agree with CIG on this. USA vs UK is an easy victory for the USA.

I'm struggling with Norway vs Sweden at the minute. Edging towards Sweden currently for generally being more diverse and still producing a shit load of top tier metal albums.

Sweden vs. Norway
United Kingdom vs. USA

Sweden vs Norway isn't really close for me, sure norway have alot of great bands and is a good metal country but Sweden just have so many pioneers in different styles. Like Bathory, Treblinka, Candlemass, Nihilist, Dismember, Dissection, At the Gates, Heavy Load, Europe, Katatonia, etc.

UK vs US is much closer imo, not even sure if I voted right when I went with the US, may change my vote before closing time.

I feel the same way about people choosing Norway over Sweden.

Norway vs. Sweden is a much closer thing to me, I'm still not 100% happy with my choice. I'm just really into Gouge and Deathhammer right now.

Sabbath? Priest? Motörhead? Maiden? Bolt Thrower? Carcass? Venom? Saxon? Diamond Head? Budgie?

Great bands, but in the long term I don't think the UK can compete, their glory days are in the past whereas I think the USA is a frontrunner in providing a decent future for metal. That's just how I see it.
