Metal World Cup

Shit, after lots of thinking I've come to realize that Sweden is superior to Norway. At least when it comes to multitude of bands in different subgenres.

Sweden vs. Norway
United Kingdom vs. USA

Sweden vs. Norway

I go with Sweden even though I think Norway's top 4-5 bands are better than any other country's top bands. The problem is they mostly do the same type of music and behind those 4-5 bands there's not much else, while Sweden is diverse and has good and historically important bands in almost every genre of metal.

United Kingdom vs. USA

It's hard to go against the UK because there wouldn't be any metal without it, and there's at least 3-4 good British metal bands for every decade after the 70s. I have to go with diversity again though; USA has a plethora of good and important bands in almost every genre.

No, Sweden is superior in every way. You had it right at first.

As for my vote:

Sweden vs Norway

UK vs USA

Eh, perhaps. But even as an American metalhead, I don't feel we've created anything capable of outdoing the majesty of Sabbath, Maiden, or Priest, or the power of Motörhead or Venom. We've got droves of legendary bands, and have made our fair share of brilliant innovations to the genre, but still, it's nearly impossible to top all those ultra classic monster bands. Maybe I'm wrong, I dunno.

USPM is one of my favourite genres, plus there is Pentagram, Manilla Road, Legend.

I love USPM. But Black motherfrigging Sabbath. The godfathers themselves. Motörhead, arguably one of the most consistent bands in rock and roll, and originators of speed and thrash. I just have a hard time seeing this, even as a rabid fanboy of Manilla Road, Pentagram, Legend, Manowar, etc.

Fair enough, but for me the continued consistency of the country itself is the most important factor. Lemmy is already dead, the Sabbathians soon to follow.

A fair point. But I'm hard-pressed to find American bands that can top those original legacies. Death, Manowar, Dio, Slayer, and Megadeth probably come the closest.

Metallica also, the whole Bay Area thrash scene like testament and so on, the Florida death metal scene (obituary, atheist, morbid angel...) socal thrash (which isn't mentioned as much but there are so many good bands, slayer and dark angel for example). The big names in progressive metal from dream theater to symphony x to queensryche.

Tons of innovation here for better or worse. Hollywood glam metal, Texas groove metal, Seattle grunge etc.
