Er, do you mean the stuff you listen to looks better as notes on paper than most metal? Or that metal can't be as emotionally complex and as mentally stimulating as your music is? The thing is, people will always like what feels and sounds right to them. I love some bands that aren't metal. I hate a lot of bands that are metal. At least 70% of my favourite bands will always be metal bands though.

I think it's important to look at music as art rather than science. Last I checked, art was defined as an expression of raw human emotion. Take that away and tell people they should only like what is superior in your eyes is taking away the point of it all. How can you feel an emotional connection with something dictated, forced and mechanical? After all, if everyone listens to what you listen to, no one will try pushing the boundaries or creating anything new - which has always been important in metal as a genre.

Maybe your musical ear is stunted, if you can't hear the subtleties in metal music? I'm not saying there aren't crappy, shallow and non-subtle metal bands in bunches, but your percentage rate is just ridiculously wrong in my book, and there are as many crappy, shallow and non-subtle bands/artists in most genres. There's even a lot of crappy, shallow and non-subtle classical music, believe it or not!

About N.Y., well in music you gotta get old for your music to be revered generally and most of the old guys are held so high above the sky because it's the popular thing to do so basically I am out of discussion here. However this is not a really solid ground to discuss/compare the music. His extensive catalog is not dazzling me neither the subtleties that you mentioned seems to be

edit: Although I do agree that metal can't be taken seriously for the most part (which is why I don't listen to it much anymore). It's good for entertainment, but not much beyond that.

Why? Metal never seemed to share with you certain feelings/thoughts in a certain point?
and I do agree that we shouldn't take metal seriously sometimes when it comes to beliefs.I know a lot of people became atheist because loads of metal lyrics reject religions and deal with evil and satanism, but it's just an imagery i think nothing more !!
 
No more Metal for me. Only bob dylan, neil young, the rolling stones, john coltrane, j.s. bach, and beethoven from now on.

By the way Arasmas, do you list over 50% of people you would like to have sex with as female? If so, are you sexually stunted?

I listen to a wide variety of music, and metal is definitely in there. It seems, though that Arasmas cares about his opnions more than anyone else does. He also must believe that HE is the best music critic he knows. At any rate I really didn't read most of his post, as most of them seem too long and wordy. Just don't have the time. But at any rate, Arasmas seems to be at a higher level of intelligence than the rest of the world, so good for him!:)

this kind of brings me around to a point i have about the music listening habits of the entire world population. that is, people tend to like what they liked when they were teenagers, for their whole lives. we all know the baby boomer parent types that only listen to buffalo springfield and mountain and whatever. in comparison - for many people my age, metal was the music we loved during our formative high school years. and this is fine. every kid is an idiot, and since we are easily swayed by trends and other people's dumb opinions during these years, we usually like shitty music.

the thing is, people like me have learned that there are other worlds of music out there that simply put metal to shame. i simply cannot understand how somebody could be exposed to such extraordinarily mind-expanding musicians as bob dylan, neil young, the rolling stones, john coltrane, j.s. bach, and beethoven, and STILL want to listen to metal. literally the only reason i listen to metal these days is for an occasional dose of nostalgia.

the only conclusion i can draw from this is that people above the age of say, 20, who still list above 50% of their favorite bands as metal bands, are musically stunted. these people do not have the capacity to appreciate music. but naturally they don't realize this about themselves - they think they are the best musical critics they know. and it is impossible to persuade them otherwise - somewhat akin to trying to persuade a fundamentalist mormon that there is no god. nothing you can put into words will have any effect on them whatsoever.

but of course, they will staunchly defend their love of the world's most self-parodic genre. but don't worry - i've heard all the arguments in the book. and here's the thing - i'm someone who has been there and back. i KNOW why people like metal. because i kinda do, in a way. but i've realized that it is nothing more than a fun, kitschy alternative to real music.
