Movies

When I saw City of God I remember that there were things (even from main characters) that were not subbed. Granted, it wasn't near as bad as the movie Moose was watching, but it annoys me to no end when they don't sub at least everything main characters are saying.

Eh. Not everything translates.

Not everything translates directly, but you can at least offer an equivalent metaphor. That's where translation as an art form comes in.

but back to my point: the subs on Satyricon were so bad that I could barely follow the plot of the movie, even though I've actually read the original Petronius.

I just got back from Stranger Than Fiction. Actually pretty damned good. I don't see why it was billed as a comedy but oh well. And I'm not entirely sure I'm happy with the ending but it's a tough call whether or not I'd rather have had it ended differently.

"Little Man"
I didn't really care to see this movie, but it turned out to be pretty funny.

This weekend was Movie Weekend™:

The Petrified Forest
A cool and early Bogart flick, not his best by far, but still very enjoyable.

Diner
Decent, but it had potential for a lot more (interesting) drama than the director seems to have been willing to put in there.

Kingdom of Heaven
A positive surprise actually. My only gripe is that Orlando Bloom and that girl he (in accordance to all that is Hollywood) falls in love with, are just too damn good looking to be belivable. Two photo models have nothing to do on the ramparts of Jerusalem.

Slither: not worth renting. Just play your 12 year old copy of a copy of Evil Dead instead. It's far far far superior.

The Proposition: not sure what to think about this one. Perhaps one of the bleakest movies I've ever seen. Made me want to kill myself - and that was just the Australian landscape. The actual plot, characters, and violence were even more disturbing. Rent it.

THANK YOU FOR SMOKING ... movie about spin ... entertaining enough, but overall pointless.

Rob Lowe as a Hollywood superagent and lover of all things Japanese stole the show

The Break-up is funnier if you're married. J. and I both thought it was quite funny.

An Evil Dead remake? Wtf? What does Bruce have to say about it?

I like this news:

Nausicaa.net has recently reported that the elder Miyazaki has plans to direct his next film, having made up his mind about its "mood." It will apparently take place in Kobe. Among areas that Miyazaki's team visited as part of pre-production were the view of a city from high in the mountains and a mysterious old café run by an elderly couple. The exact location of these places was censored from Studio Ghibli's production diaries. They have also recently announced that Hayao Miyazaki has begun work on the film's storyboards, which are being produced as watercolors because of the film's "unusual visual style". It will apparently take about 20 months to produce with a planned release date of summer 2008. The film's title among other information will be released in a press release this December.

Just got back from the new James Bond. It ruled, and Daniel Craig ruled in it.

That movie really surprised me. I saw it on a whim with some friends last friday, and the dark gritty violent-film-noir style of the movie really appealed to me. Less emphasis on the same old plot outline of meaningless violence/meaningless sex/meaningless violence/meaningless sex/meaningless violence/meaningless car-chase/meaningless violence/meaningless sex/meaningless violence/meaningless closing sex scene that is normally characteristic of Bond movies, and more emphasis on making Bond this dark spy character, always on keeping his employers on edge, and always pursued by his enemies.

All other Bond movies look stupid in comparison.
