Movies

We actually had the discussion about The Descent much earlier in this thread - I'm firmly in the 'best horror film of the last decade or so' camp. Mainly because of the claustrophobic atmosphere conjured through clever cinematography and imaginative use of lighting, the fact that Neil Marshall allowed the first half of the film to introduce the setting itself as the main danger before even introducing the 'monsters', the use of both post-modern gender stereotype reversals (independant, strong female characters in a horror movie, rather than big titted 'run into the woods and scream types') and generic B-movie cliches (the 'it was just a nightmare' scares)... Basically, it ruled.

The first 40 minutes before they reach the cave is like watching a bad MTV reality show. No character development whatsoever. Good horror to me is a movie that sucks you in and has you pulling for the protagnist's survival. I was apathetic towards the whole lot of them and eventually started rooting for the "smeagles" to annihilate them cackling hyenas. The main character turning from being on the verge of a nervous break down in to being John Rambo in a span of one hour, achieved nothing more than making the villainous Barakas look weak.

I won't even bother mentioning the ending. How fucking putrid. :Puke:

2 severed thumbs way down.

Just watched "The Descent", and I must admit that it disappointed me quite a bit. I don't find "monsters" particularly scary or frightening anymore, especially not when they're as cartoonish and unrealistic as they were in this film. Also, as RiA pointed out, the characters were extremely bland. On par with the other "cave horror" movie I've watched this year; "The Cave". 5.5/10, tops.

Edit: I might as well post my thoughts on some other films from 2006 in this thread.

The Hills Have Eyes: Far from scary, and merely OK. The whole "weird monsters killing a lot of people" thing really isn't my cup of tea anymore. I suppose it's a decent macabre action movie, but not a good horror flick.

Beerfest: Surprisingly funny, featuring RC's very own JayKeeley as a male gigolo/beer sports champion. I tend to dislike movies like this, but I was pleasantly surprised by this theatrical homage to beer.

Dirty Sanchez: The Movie: Absolutely brilliant, brainless humour. I'm a huge fan of the series (somehow the Sanchez blokes seem more genuine and just downright funnier than the Jackass guys, who I'm also a fan of), and this is possibly even better.

Jackass 2: Where the Dirty Sanchez movie had an actual storyline (storyline's maybe stretching it a bit, but there's definitely a red line throughout the movie), this is just a collection of more or less funny stunts. Enjoyable.

Miami Vice: I suppose it was decent enough, but lacked a bit in the "cool" department. OK storyline and nice settings, but I'm not sure if I'll watch it again.

The Devil Wears Prada: My (ex) girlfriend dragged me to the theatres to watch this, and I openly admit that I found it perfectly acceptable. Sure, it's a girl's flick, but it was above average, and quite funny at times.

Snakes On A Plane: Silliest concept in ages, and I believe the directors and Big Sam himself were perfectly aware of this fact. Instead of taking itself seriously, the film offered some decent action with its tongue firmly placed in its cheek - thankfully.

Rollin' With The Nines: I really enjoyed this British gangsta film. "Rollin With The Nines" can be compared to "Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels" at times, although it lacks some of the elegance and finesse of the latter. Still, this is one of the better films I've seen this year, and it's highly recommended.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Dead Man's Chest: Not as good as the first, but still an excellent adventure film. Top notch entertainment, and one of the finest films of 2006.

I've yet to watch "V For Vendetta", "Blood Diamond", "Borat" and "Lucky Number Slevin".

"Black Christmas" was kind of dumb and funny, but kind of cool at the same time.

Don't bother. Unless you wanna watch it just to see how ridiculously bad a movie can be. It was definately entertaining in that regard.

I saw "A History Of Violence" last night. Very strange film. Cronenberg's most "normal" film apparently. I thought it was shit until I realised he was taking the piss.

I have The Descent at home ready to be viewed ... if it ends up being as overrated as V for V ... we are in trouble

I loved Descent. Jackass 2 was funny as shit. I actually really enjoyed Lady In The Water as it was a nice fiary tale to escape reality. Use your imagination a little people. Never work in a video store when you are as opinionated as me or the rest of you. Its hard not to tell people how fucking stupid they must be when they ask " MAN I CANT WAIT FOR MOTOR HOME MASSACRE, ITS LOOKS GOOD" . Right.

"The Haunting"
Not bad. I like how these old horror movies can still create a scary atmosphere and stuff without all the fancy special effects of today. One part in the movie SCARED THE SHIT out of me.

Finally saw Casino Royal. Pretty rad. I enjoyed the fact that is was very un-bond. IT had it identifying Bond characteristics but a definite step away from the fancy gadgets and other such things.
