Movies

hehe ... is it worse than Magnolia?
I am thinking I Heart Huckabees is some pretentious indie flick with some very annoyingly quirkie characters.

Never saw Magnolia, don't have much desire to. But you hit the proverbial nail on the head with that description.

Fucking quirky existential bullcaka. They ought to take away these people's rights to make movies.

Friday Night Lights

Awesome. It's based on the true story of a small town Texas high school football team and their run at the state championship. Sure, the story has been told before, but not like this. There are no MTV-esque moments (maybe one) or James Van Der Beeks or Scott Caans or Paul Walkers or predictable endings where everyone is happy except the "bad guys". This is real, almost has a documentary feel about it. It uses the real team names and cities. However, there is one facet of the movie I know some of you will have an issue with that comes towards the end, but get over it because it is the way things are down here.

Having lived in Texas my whole life, I guess it hits home a lot harder than it will any of you. Also, having been a fairly good athlete myself in high school helps me understand some of the pressure these guys went through. The movie shows how serious Texas takes its high school football. Plus, I got nostalgic seeing the Astrodome.

Billy Bob Thornton is the only "name" in this movie, as all the football players are no-names and it works a lot better that way. None of them are your Hollywood darlings with perfect hair and shit.

If you were ever an athlete or a huge sports nut, you'll find something to like in this movie. It's not flashy, and can get a little cheesy at times, but it remains true to the story, and won me over. Recommended.

MEAN STREETS

Saw this one at least a dozen times already, but it gets so much better every time.
Harvey Keitel and DeNiro, being two of my favorite actors, just completely rule here.

THE LAST WALTZ (yes, I am doing a Scorsese marathon this very lazy Saturday afternoon)

What is amazing from this 60's-70's era bands is all the actual unique voices that came out of it. I mean truely individual vocalists. In this movie alone, which for those that do not know, is the farewell concert of The Band ... there is Bob Dylan, Jonie Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Ronnie Hawkins, Neil Young, etc ... all doing songs with them.
Think about those voices of those names above ... how unique they are. :kickass:

And it is sad that this is so lacking in today's music of cookie cutter bands and musicians.

If you are a fan of music ... you have to see this film. By far one of the best concert films EVER!

Gladiator has been playing on TNT a bnch lately. Watching it made me wondering what the blue fuck was the Academy thinking when this won Best Picture. It's total cheeseball bullshit.

Because they wouldn't give it to Couching Tiger Hidden Dragon, due to it being Chinese. Plus, Braveheart already won it for something very similar so I guess there was a trend going.

The Oscars = Bullshit.

Judi Dench won an oscar for 6 minutes worth of screen time for Shakespeare in Love. Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese has never won a thing.

And then, Denzel Washington won for Training Day (and quite fucking right too). But just to balance out the black thing, Halle Berry won for Monsters Ball, one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Billy Bob Thornton should stick to films like Pushing Tin and Bad Santa.

Gladiator is one of those movies that I recognize as pisspoor, but I've purposely watched it at least 5,782,912 times. It's good stupid fun, complete with bad acting!

I like Gladiator. Is it Oscar worthy? No. Even the CGI is pretty lame. Plus the action sequences are horrid - way too close up to the fighting, so you can't see what's going on.

But yeah, it's cool - the best thing has to be the soundtrack. Hans Zimmer is a demigod.

SO you've seen him in Friday Night Lights? Or are you just saying that because both his roles in Pushing Tin and Bad Santa kicked mucho ass? God, Bad Santa was so fucking grand.

Football/sports fan will enjoy Friday Night Lights. It's not like all these underdog-conquers-all-obstacles-to-win-the-big-game movies. It's seems a lot more real than all those Any Given Sundays and Versity Blues and The Programs. Thornton did a commendable job. He gave the character realism and wasn't over the top like Pacino, Voight, and Caan.

I liked it, but I don't think many in this forum would.

Gladiator is on right now. I mean, wtf, the emperor fighting in a one-on-one match with an ex general? HUH???????

No haven't seen that one yet, but yeah, nobody else could have played those roles better than him in PT and BS.

Another good American Football movie was the one with Denzel Washington, about the first team with both blacks and whites all those 15 years ago or whatever. Geez, the USA really has a fucking sordid recent history. Anyway, I suppose it was good because it was a true story.

I haven't seen that one, Remember the Titans.

The fact that Friday Night Lights was based on a true story made the movie better.

The only one I've seen is Badder Santa, so I can't compare.

For some reason, my local video store doesn't rent the "special edition" DVDs, only the regular. So the only way I can see the uncut version of American Wedding, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, Badder Santa, or Euro Trip is to buy them. Fuck that.
