Just saw DONNIE DARKO ... was very sucked in by the story and the mood was great. Needless to say the story left me a little more than confused.
Anyone care to chime in on their take on it? This one needs some discussion for sure.

Wings was a great show, its on Fridays around 6 eastern on TVland.

The problem if I understand it correctly of Donnie Darko, is the director ran out of money to film the whole story, and thus many critical plot points were left out. But I thought the new dvd version added these plot points, or at least explained the whole story, but I havent seen the new version.

Here is a good explanation that I found a long time ago: http://www.anthroid.net/autopsiadonniedarko.htm

It's pretty long, so make sure you have about 20 or 30 minutes to spare, because you'll find yourself going back and readng certain parts.

I personally thought it was a great movie, but it's not the bst thing ever, nor is it the Movie Messiah. It's a great independent film about us humans trying to find purpose and reasoning behind our existence. Not an original message, but it certainly was told in an original way with DD.

Did you see Donnie Darko Director's Cut? It is supposed to be much better. Its the only version I've seen. It was still confusing, though. I felt the movie was all about the existence of God . . . in a VERY fucked up way.

I just say Whale Rider, and I must say the movie was EXCELLENT. Most people around here won't like it, though. The 10 or 11 year old girl in that movie should have recieved a best actress award. When she got up to give her little school speech I just about started bawling. I don't see how a person that age can act like that. It looked completely real to me. Excellent movie.

We own this. I actually find it difficult to watch just because the kid is SO fantastic, plus she's 'mistreated' by her father. (Or rather ignored, and it's pretty sad to watch).

There's another film that you should try and see called Dark Water. It's Japanese horror (ghost story) and the kid in it is just remarkable. I honestly don't know how they get her to act like that, she can't be more than 6 years old.

I figured it was the father in me that made the films what they are, but seems like anyone can relate. Or perhaps you're just ready for parenthood Nate. ;)

And for the love of goat, watch the original Dark Water before the Jennifer Connolly hollywood remake comes out.

'Dark Water' must be the first movie to actually give me the creeps since... well, must have been 'The Exorcist', back in another life.

Just came back from the cinema, we watched 'Sophie Scholl', this historic drama about a bunch of students getting sentenced to death after spreading some anti-nazi flyers at the Munich University, 1942. Pretty intense atmosphere all throughout in spite of the very dry (very 'German'...) handling (sparse music, static takes...) - it's cool they stuck to the actual facts and original records of the proceedings, which brings credible evidence of how insane - and at the same time so extremely desperate - the German administration and its high executors actually were at the time. Good movie for a change, plus I seldom experienced such a quiet audience. I think the actress got an award for her performance. Any German RCer to confirm?

I've been meaning to see Whale Rider. My grandfather (who has seen probably 1000 movies in his long life-time) claims this to be the best he has ever seen. That's saying a lot...

Yes, rented this based on your rating on the Netflix Friends folder ;)
It was good, definetelly captivating and eerie. I am not sure I liked that explanation posted in J's link. Might have to rewatch this someday.

Yes, that is what I got from it as well. Even though the tone and ending are sad, the movie turns out to be quite uplifting and positive.

I watched this on my own, and when it ended, I was just....ugh, can't explain, but nevertheless I told my wife that she should never, ever see it. Knowing her, it would upset her to the point of mental scarring.

It's from the same guy who directed Ringu, but of course, this is less warped and more in touch with the traits of simple humanity. Very, very underrated movie -- although they're remaking it so it can't be that underrated. Go figure.

I saw "Life Is A Miracle" - the recent Kusturica movie. It was crazy, realistic, and overall - divine.

I heard about this ... if it's as good as Black Cat, White Cat ... :worship:

why are Zombies refered to so frequently in reviews/descriptions of "Happiness of the Katakuris"

THERE WERE HARDLY ANY ZOMBIES

Yeah my mom was pretty pissed when she didn't win last year. I still haven't seen it. I still haven't seen Dark Water either but want to. Tonight if I stay in I'll watch Mulhulland Drive.

Donnie Darko = Quantum Physics/Theory + a tad of existentialism

I love that movie. If you have a general understanding of Quantum Theory, the movie is little more interesting and thought provoking as well. I haven't seen that movie in a long time. I should tomorrow or soemthing.

Black cat, white cat was the crudest and most annoying slapstick movies I've ever seen, the only thing I can recall that made me chuckle was that serbian pimp with his hoes who sang that "pitbull! terrier" song hehe. From the reviews I've seen of Life is a Miracle it seems that one is even more burlesque and over the top, though I doubt that's humanly possible; screaming people falling over and lovesick donkies is not my definition of humour :P
