Movies

Woo that one is in my Netfux thingy, should be here rather soon. :kickass:

I already have 126 discs in my queueureueure and I've been trying to be conservative.

I can't believe people enjoyed Lost in Translation. Even my wife, who likes indie films (she absolutely loves Napoleon Dynamite and liked Garden State) couldn't sit through it and was wondering when something was actually going to happen.

It was, quite frankly, shit. And I'm glad Murray and that hack of a director chick didn't win any major awards. They should both know better than to unleash dross like that.

Murray, go back to Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day type stuff, dude. Quit trying to win oscars.

well to elaborate ... Lost In Translation ... to me at least ... fits in the "cinema of loneliness" category.
there were some elements on that movie that I could relate to ... the big city life and being lost in it, etc.

hack of a director chick

that would be Coppolla's daughter :loco:

bottle rocket = good
rushmore = good
tennenbaums = good
lost in translation = bad
in fact, movies with scarlett johannson = bad. please, i implore you to name a good one.

Bottle Rocket. Holy shit that movie was great.

Anyone ever see the indie flick Elephant, based on Columbine? Pure dogshit.

Movies that we have recently rented, but never got round to watching:
- Closer
- The Red Violin

Movies that we have recently got sucked into watching in their entirety on TV:
- Starsky & Hutch - I admit, it makes me laugh
- Das Experiment - well, I did not watch in its entirety, I got so irritated I had to leave the room... JayK stuck it out and then was pissed for a full day about how irritating it became at the end :bah:
- Once Upon a Time in the Midlands - not bad

This weekend I think we'll rent The Life Aquatic... I give it about a 50% chance we'll watch it too. :loco:

yes, ELEPHANT was an atrocity ... shit ... I wanted those kids to get fuckign killed they annoyed me so much.

Lost In Translation was the most boring movie have ever seen, ousting Million Dollar Hotel which previously held the title. Acting and cinematography can't rescue a script that is pointless and meanders for more than two hours without making any points.

Good Scarlett Johannsen movies:
Ghost World, though I can see a lot of people NOT liking that one
In Good Company, not fantastic, but a good movie

I enjoyed Life Aquatic, but it definitely makes it to the worst of the Wes Anderson movies spot. But, I love his quirky directing style, so yeah.

I've seen quite a few movies lately, but don't have time to comment on them all. Just a few:
Ray - really good, surprisingly so.
The Terminal - worst Tom Hanks movie since Turner & Hooch; just a horrid script
Cube Zero - pales in comparison to the first. why does this guy keep remaking the same movie with different actors and making it worse each time?

:hypno: Or one the most beautiful movies evar.

I'm thinking of seeing War of the Worlds, anyone here who's already seen it and can comment on it?

hmm ... without making any points?

I expect an interesting story. Two boring Americans stuck in Jap Land does not an interesting movie make. Like Jimbob said, who cares how it looks if the script and story put you to sleep.

I honestly believe people claim to like indie movies more than Hollywood movies simply because they think it makes them look more cultured or something. Armageddon and Independence Day was better movie watching than LiT.

oh oh ... we are steering the ship into underground vs. popular metal territory ... iceberg ahead :loco:

Is it that hard to believe that someone has a different opinion than you do?

Personally, I don't like 'indie' movies as a rule, but I generally prefer movies that at least don't insult my intelligence. Movies like Armageddon are more or less just action-vomit, which is what you want every now and then. However, the moment one of those movies finishes, you can wipe you mind clean of it forever. I didn't love Lost in Translation (didn't hate it either), but I like the fact that I was still thinking about it after it ended. That's what I liked about movies like Being John Malkovich or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. There's more of a reward when you are forced to use your brain.

hahaha ... i love where this is going ... as this is easily on the same level discussion as the indie underground bands we all "love" and feel so "close" to ...vs. the Bon Jovi's and Judas Priests.

come on J. be consistent :loco:

Yeah, what haddsie and lurch said.

Hollywood schlock is usually just that, schlock. Sure there are some decent big budget flicks out there, but not that many and especially not lately.

substance > shit
