Movies

This years Oscars was tough because you knew that LOTR was gonna sweep the board - even at the expense of the other great films. Out of all the films that were nominated, the only one I have not seen (because it has not been released in the UK) is Mystic River. Lost In Translation was excellent and I'm glad that Bill Murray won the Emmy. Whale Rider was a magnificent film and that little girl is gonna go places. But, LOTR deserved to win those Oscars because it was 'payback' for all the hard work to make the entire trilogy.

In my days it was the Star Wars trilogy that was the best thing since sliced bread...fast forward 20 years and people are now saying that LOTR is best thing since sliced bread.

Totally unrelated: I watched Underworld last night, and am now hopefully in lust with Kate Beckinsale. I'm more excited for Van Helsing now.
Underworld sucks big fat cocks - big time. The only thing going for it is Kate.

Considering you're only 2 years older than I am, I feel justified in saying that the original Star Wars trilogy WAS great...for its time. It has been left FAR, FAR in the dust by LOTR. I mean, it's not even close.

It certainly wasn't what I would term a memorable movie, but I enjoyed it for the unthinking dollop of mediocrity that it was. Some cool FX at least.

I love Star Wars, but there is no comparison to LOTR. Star Wars had an occasionally dodgy story and terrible acting, and Lord of the Rings... well, you know. :)

The only possible flaw with LOTR is Liv Tyler, and she's still pretty good. Just not absolutely perfect like the entire rest of the cast.

just picked up Schindler's List on DVD yesterday .. have not seen it in awhile but it still packs quite a punch.

Liam Neeson was amazing and so was Ralph Fiennes ... the talk they have about Power is classic. I love it how Amon goes around the next day "pardoning" everyone instead of killing them ... but then realizes it is just not him to do such things.

I haven't either. But I saw some bigass special edition box for $70 at Target today!

Ooooooooooooh 14 hours of Spielberg outtakes. :Smug:

The other day I watched "Catch Me If You Can" on TV. Not a bad movie, but nothing special. It could have been made by anyone. What the heck happened to Steven Spielberg? This is the guy who went from Jaws, Close Encounters, ET, and Raiders of the Lost Ark to Amistad, Jurassic Park, A.I., Minority Report, and Catch me if you Can....talk about losing your magic trouch.

watched "gattaca" the other night. a really good movie and a good depiction of a future society of A and B people due to gene modificaton.

also "the ninth gate" a second time. i just love that flick, one of my all time favourties i think.

I really like the Ninth Gate. As soon as I'm done reading all of the Dark Tower books (again), I'm gonna read The CLub Dumas, which is what the Ninth Gate is based.

I'm watching The Game, with Michael Douglas. THis movie is awesome the first time you see it. After that, it's a just plain good.

cool, didn't know that, think i'll add it to my to read-list then.

watched road to perdition tonight. nothing spectacular in any way but a good movie. the best thing was the photo; great looking flick.

The Game (and everything thing else from Fincher) = awesome
Road To Perdition was excellent
Gattaca = probably THE best pure Sci Fi movie ever made

I saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind last night. Best movie that's I've seen in a while; possibly since Adaptation. Just plain brilliant. Charlie Kaufman once again proves he is the best screenwriter working today.

I watched Cinema Paradiso a week or so ago; excellent flick. It's kind of an artsy, introspective type movie, so if that's not your thing you'll probably get bored. It's not as boring as Lost in Translation, though, so don't think that.

I also saw The Missing finally and was thoroughly underwhelmed. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't that good either. Just average and not all that interesting.

Runaway Jury

Better than expected. Some of it was predictable, but then some of it was a big surprise. GOod for a Friday night blockbuster night. And John Cusack rules as usual.

I REALLY want to see Eternal Sunshine. Considering that you liked it, now I know I will like it.

Thanks? Not sure if that means I'm really picky or you just generally agree with my taste. My roommate has been telling every person he talks to to go see it since we saw it. It's kind of funny, actually, but the movie is just so damn fantastic.

Oh, I also saw:
Secret Window - pretty solid movie; nothing spectacular, but I'm a big John Turturro fanboy, so I had to see it. Johnny Depp is excellent in it, also. Definitely worth a matinee, IMO.

Starsky & Hutch - pretty funny overall, but not Zoolander funny. I would prefer they stick to pure comedies instead of the pseudo drama/comedies like this. Some good laugh-out-loud moments, though, and Owen Wilson is great in pretty much everything.
