blues and jazz are nearly just as much african american cultural music as rap/hiphop are they not? originally at least
You have no idea how deeply my tongue was implanted within my cheek when I wrote "african-american cultural music"

what? i didn't say i hated them, just that they pretty much originated among groups of african american former slaves, etc.

then white people started listening and look what happened :hypno:

Indigenous rocks the blues baby. American Indians know what the blues is.

the genres themselves don't suck. if there's a single exception, it proves that the genre itself is capable of more than is conventionally achieved with it. to me, at least, that sounds like human fault, which has little to do with the genre in itself does it?

more like "band X (being the good band) gets unjustly grouped in with a genre that sucks despite them being obviously different (better) than the rest"

cue some fags listing 5000 bands that sound like either amebix or fields

well i won't be one of those fags, i've never heard those bands

but i still think that a single band, as long as they remain within the established framework of a genre, can prove the genre itself to be of more worth than in that band's absence

i don't really have examples, maybe i should think about that

Demilich your taking this whole thing way to seriously brotha.

I think i talked about this in some other thread, sometimes i get really into thinking about shit critically. who knows why, but it doesn't hurt to talk about things serously, so why not?

Haha, I dunno, sucks the fun out of the whole shebang sometimes.

You know what Tully? I know it does and sometimes I notice even while I'm doing it  I guess I'll try to lighten up for the sake of not dragging this place into multi-page freakouts over serious things all the time

Well it STILL makes sense to say "genre X sucks"... Generalising is often quite practical.

Yeah, definitely. I think its 2 different uses of "genre". If you take "genre" as the group of bands itself, yeah, i'd say some genres (i.e. power and death metal) pretty much suck because I like hardly any fucking bands from them, but if i were taking the genre to mean the actual style itself, the ideal, then a genre would be as good as the greatest manifestation it had achieved so far
