So, if I counted it right (399 + 1 = 400), this will be my 400th message in these boards (about half of them at the Opeth-forum, the majority of the rest here and a few others all over the place). And mind you, most of the time I have tried to keep up a certain level of quality in my posts (sometimes failing miserably, but anyway) and only rarely have I posted with nothing to say.
To celebrate that I have found myself a new avatar (from where you ask? I'm coming to that right next) and I even spent a moment thinking about a funny title for it, but alas, nothing intelligent came up.
But about the other topic in the subject of this post: I just yesterday finally got the chance to watch through all the episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion (the original episodes 1-24 plus The End of Evangelion in place of episodes 25-26) - and pardon my foul language, but HOLY FUCK that was amazing!!!
I have had only a few encounters with decent anime before, but this time I was struck by awe! It was just something completely different. You know, TLotR: FotR looked great and all that, but as I knew the story all-too-well beforehand, there was nothing that could have surprised me (well, except for the missing of Glorfindel and the far too big role of Arwen).
But here, with NGE, I was expecting some action-based animated comedy with one-dimensional teenage characters and big mecha - and for the first ten or so episodes it was all that (well, except for a few small hints of what would come). And then suddenly, yet smoothly, the story takes a few ambitious turns towards a philosophically and psychologically challenging drama that ends in a way no Hollywood-made film could ever end.
I don't want to give any spoilers, but if you just get the chance, spend a day from your life to watch this series. But I warn you, you might be forced to spend a night or two thinking just what it all meant. I did that last night and I still have no clue.
Anyone here who likes Evangelion / other anime?
