Need some advice: What band should I buy next?

If you haven't already checked it out, I think you would really fit in and like the musical tastes of the guys over at the Old School board. They are more into the power metal type thing over there and could probably give you some good recommendations.

*lol*

You told me the exact same thing back when I first joined and was only listening to power metal. Oh, how the times have changed!

I also heartily endorse Avian. If you want hear some better quality clips, they have high quality two minute clips of all the tracks from the debut CD at http://cdbaby.com/cd/avian.

While I love the entire debut album (From The Depths Of Time), I specifically suggest you check out As The Burns Burns, Single Blade of Vengeance, Blinding Force, Queen of the Insane, The Depths of Time, and most of all: Final Frontier. Holy crap that song rocks.

I've been to every show they've performed. I really love this band. They're currently recording their sophomore effort and it will be out this year.

If you buy it, I suggest you buy it from Nightmare Records. That is lead singer Lance King's record label/distro: http://www.nightmarerecords.com

A couple more from the genre that I love:

Sonata Arctica (as others have mentioned): check out their newest album Reckoning Night (the one with Don't Say A Word on it): the song White Pearl, Black Oceans is probably the most incredible, epic power metal song I've ever heard. If you get into them, check them out when they swing past you (Sept 21 in Chicago). They put on a hell of a show. I'll be catching them at ProgPower in Atlanta (and maybe I'll make the drive to Chicago, as well).

Theocracy: incredible Christian power metal band. Check out their tunes at:

Ayreon too, totally forgot. Arjen Lucassen is a genius. I consider Into the Electric Castle as their best work.

@Seastorm: Sonata Arctica's best work is Reckoning Night, for sure. Such a mature effort compared to their other albums, I was pleasantly surprised when they released it, as I expected them to release more of the same stuff.

I also want to add Primal Fear and Nevermore to my list. And Luca Turilli's 'Kings of the Nordic Twilight' album, since its very close to being a Rhapsody release.

EDIT: He's already got Primal Fear. Oh well...

Savatage (although I have a feeling you might already own that. If you don't, slide that up your list)
Skyclad
Primordial

BTW, if you've ever heard the hilarious St. Anger parody, that was done by Matt Smith of Theocracy. If anyone spent a fair amount of time getting to know St. Anger (as I unfortunately did), you'll know this parody is spot on. Check it out at:

Yeah, I'm still debating whether or not to buy Sonata. I like the song, "Don't Say a Word", but can't seem to get into any of the other ones. I guess I'd just need to hear them completely in good high-quality data rates.

Yeah, I've got their Christmas MP3s of Little Drummer Boy, Deck the Halls, and their Medley song. Good stuff. Also had a few short samples from their album and really couldn't make much out of those samples.
