The name "scares" people? Don't think that has anything to do with it  Most people don't judge on the name but on the music

I think that the most people have no clue what it means
I'm talking about people who's mother tongue is not English ;)

I also never met a non english person (excluding some fans) who pronounce it the right way.. therefore I don't think that a new name would help to change much.. I actually think that it sounds very nice (not considering the meaning *g*.. although the meaning is not bad either  )

Danny, did you heard the new Porcupine Tree album (In Absentia) ?

I think that it's the sound that you should try to reach for the new album, it's the perfect mix of mellow stuffs with some heaviness.

Also, in my opinion, Steven Wilson would be the perfect producer for the new album.

Patrick from Montreal, Canada.

yeah i guess the name is pulling them down too, coz sometimes when (ordinary) people ask me, what kinda bands i like and when i say anathema, they make a funny faces... usually imagining some METAL stuff...

A band is depending on one simple and only thing to become"bigger" nowadays dudies :
the money his record compay is spreading around to do the promo stuff...Trust me.
If MFN would have been EMI instead (ow no, this is a bad example  ), but let's say Sony...They would have been able to pay te right price to put their bands like Anathema on the radio shows, make some more videos, and buy some big ads in Rolling Stones and stuff...

its not, if anathema is at a small label, the label would do great efforts for them, because anathema will be their topact.
for sony anathema would be the 50th band from a drawer, i want to say that they are just another band on their label. sony rather would support the big worldacts then a 'small' british band

Anathema is a latin word surely?? so theres no excuse for youse euro peons to pronounce it incorrectly

Dunno if the word is latin but what i do know:"ANATHEMA, which originates from a quotation in the bible, meaning a curse by God or the church, excommunication, damnation."

i dont think anathema get little attention so as to need to change the name or the style for being more famous.please dont do any of these.

besides what is popular is a long word for pop.

fuck, even john douglas pronounced it wrong the last and only time we met!ggrrrr

Anathema will never be hugely popular because they create "art music". Most people either don't care enough about music... or don't have the capacity to appreciate such high-quality music... for Anathema to be popular. Look at jazz, contemporary classical, progressive music, ultimate metal (term for the types of bands found at Ultimate Metal, not the mainstream crap)... etc....nobody listens to any of this stuff. Anathema has the same problem. Their music transcends the mundane commercialism of contemporary culture... they will always have their core of dedicated fans... and will continue to gain fans... but they will never attain huge commercial success in today's music world.

The problem isn't that Anathema is still known for their metal ties... the problem is that metal is so cruelly shunned and misunderstood.
