new big 4 of thrash

Hells yes! :headbang:

Megadeth is the only one to me, of the big 4, that still puts out decent albums.

I can see that. I don't like anything Metallica or Anthrax have done since the early '90's. The last album Slayer did that I really liked at all was Divine Intervention, which a lot of people would say is post-thrash, but I think it's a decent album. But since then I can pretty much count on one hand all of the listenable songs they've put out (and even those may not count as thrash). Megadeth has changed a lot since Peace Sells and Rust, to the point that I would almost say they're more progressive than thrash now, but I can tolerate that since (it seems to me, anyway) that Dave Mustaine is still putting forth a sincere effort to make good metal and not just phoning it in like the other three. Plus, I'm in love with him.

Mustaine was always very insightful, and ahead of his time. I mean, go back and look at his lyrics in 86', foretelling things to come about the UN. And on Rust, the song Holy Wars says it all....

That's very true. I always wondered how his lyrics don't come outdated even the political ones.

Yeah, Dave Mustaine is pretty much the shit. :headbang:
He will be mine. Oh yes, he will be mine.

I saw Exodus in London with Evile - fucking classic gig - personally I think Exodus are better than ever with this new line up!

In relation to the question, I´d say NO. IMO Overkill has released good albums since the 90´s but not overwhelming. Exodus just the same. Flotsam and Jetsam I´m not too much into their latest records and Testament... mmm... Testament situation is different. "Low" and "Demonic" are OK. Not similar to Testament roots but OK. However "The gathering" is over the top. I consider it as good as "The legacy" or "The new order". amazing albums. The new one seems good but I haven´t heard it too much.

Given the fact that a lot of people have mentioned any new bands, I´d like to say that the so called N.W.O.California Thrash Metal is excellent. I agree with Wyvern, they aren´t original but it´s very good stuff. My favourites are Warbringer. Until now "War without end" thrash metal album of the year.

I´d recommend you other fantastic thrash bands: STRIKELIGHT from Mexico, NOCTURNAL from Germany or spaniards REDIMONI. And talking about classic bands with excellent new albums, take a listen to germans PARADOX recent "Electrify": First class speed thrash, a mix between old Metallica and old Rage.

C'mon, time to move on guys...this coming from an old school guy.
Though they have touches of prog, try Communic, primarily thrash!

I understand the purpose of the proposal - to crown 4 great thrash bands still playing thrash but as someone else said, there just can't ever be another big four. Its over and done but they were good days.

Its great some bands are still sticking to something that resembles the style that made them big but I don't mind so much anymore if a band moves on. 9 times out of 10 most bands will never write anything as amazing as what took them the heights of thrashdom.

Out of interest...where do you all place bands like Machine Head (ignore their terrible middle albums), Death Angel, Pantera? Do they qualify as thrash? Or are they just good ol' metal?

Machine Head and Pantera are for me mallcore bands. Metal going awry to my ears, dislike them inmensely.

Death Angel is thrash with a groove approach. Their debut is very thrash, but the next two albums were not pure Bay Area thrash. The last two are excellent I love them, to me they can be catalogued as heavy metal undoubtedly.

NP: Nazareth - Goin' Loco

About the last bands you have mentioned...

Communic are amazing muzmaze but they aren´t thrash at all. In my opinion they are the european answer to Nevermore. I love "Conspiracy in mind" but "Waves of visual decay" isn´t as good for me. Longing for hearing the new one.

I´ve never been too much into Machine Head (just a couple of songs) but "The blackening" surprised me a lot and I consider it one of the best albums from 2007. A lot of classic bay area influences on that album.

Death Angel are among my favourite bands. I consider them thrash. "The ultra violence" is killer but their masterpiece is, for me, "Act III". Last 2 records are OK too.

Well, I disagree, at times they are thrash (maybe a more modern style) and the new song is more thrashy than what they have done before. Are they strictly a thrash band, of course not and maybe I should have put them in a different topic. They do label themselves (myspace) as metal / progressive / thrash. As you mentioned, they really are amazing, and thier variety of styles in thier music is what makes them so good.

Yeah, gotta say Act III is their crowning acheivement! Frolic Through the Park is pretty good.

It's me of course but I like better the new albums than the classic ones. Said that "Act III" was my introduction to the band still I found in it as well as in FTTP more grooving sound akin to the new albums that in TUV. Hve you guys ever hear The Organization? It's basically old DA without Mark Osegueda, groove metal more or less digestable, but clearly a sign of what makes the band tick.

I tend to agree but both have some redeeming qualities. I was just listening to "Floods" earlier, wondering 'Why am I listening to this?' when it got to the solo. No, its not fast or highly technical, but I liked it.

Are you sure Overkill is still not thrash? I have ALL but one of their albums, and they still sound about the same, and even heavier the last decade. I myself always favored the second wave of thrash, especially the bay area bands...
Forbidden
Heathen
Holy Terror

I got heavily into Forbidden after I acquired "Forbidden Evil", then I found in a used store "Green", I didn't like it at all, I stuck with the first two releases.

Sorry milady, I can't find any redeeming quality especially in Pantera. I had a couple of videos of Machine Head debut somewhere, I can't recall anything special about them either.

I rather go with bands like Coroner, Mekong Delta, Xentrix, Heathen, Hallows Eve, Abnadoned, Fueled By Fire

Well, I thought Distortion was good. It was a more straightfoward thrash style musically. They did 21st Century Schizoid Man(King Crimson) rather well. Russ sang a little more in the harsh vein on that one, and the Green album, which is decent. But their first 2, especially Twisted Into Form are so good. And yeah, Wyvern, I've heard the Orginization. It's not bad. They do pretty good vocal harmonies on it. I can't remember...which song had the guy pukeing on it?
