New Opeth album!

expect less growling on this album... have you guys seen opeth in the last 1 1/2 years live?

go look up vids mikes growls have gotten really really bad. otoh his cleans are better than ever.. the one thing about watershed that bugged the most was the riff transitions.. they used to be much smoother on the older albums.

I noticed that on the new DVD and I was really surprised. I didn't think much of it past that though. I hope it doesn't affect the album.

Might just been Mikael having a bad growl day, being sick or something. He has said that the Royal albert hall concert wasn't one of their best performances on that tour. Or maybe he just didn't want to strain as much to save his cleans? 3 hours of growling is pretty rough on the vocals...
All I'm saying is it's probably more or less a concious decision of some sort, I have a hard time thinking he's managed to fuck up his vocal cords after all this time and when his clean singing clearly has become so much better.

And I think it's pretty obvious that the next albums would use less and less growls. Just look at the discography... He has also said that he doesn't think he can develop his growls more than this.

now that i pay attention you can even here the difference in growling between ghost reveries and watershed. Gr his growls are much more thick and saturated sounded where as watershed they just sound weird..

mike has lost his growl. i have seen them 3 times since the release of watershed and its always sounded like butt.

An Opeth thread is never complete without lots of bitching. Every record they've put out is killer. They are better than all of our bands combined to form Bruticus. People will still be jamming out to their music 10000 years from now in spaceships. Shut the fuck up.

I noticed the growl thingie when comparing the Roundhouse Tapes to the new DVD. The deep growls don't seem to come out as well anymore.
However, I've seen Opeth live in December 2009 twice in a row (Berlin and Hamburg shows) and had absolutely no complaints on both days.

saw them about a month into the first us headlining leg of the gr tour, then about a month into gigantour us 2006, then a month or so into the first us headlining leg of the watershed tour. all three times, mikaels growls were perfectly fine.

it's a conscious decision. I'm assuming he's changing the style of growling that he's doing to hurt his vocal chords less, for his clean vocals. growling is not good for the voice by any stretch of the imagination, and with the cleans becoming even more prevalent in opeth I'd imagine that he's doing it this way to conserve his chords as much as he can.
