Americans tend to pronounce the same syllable differently, perhaps to make it sound more "authentic".

For eg. Raj, or my name for that matter.

Most languages have a specific way of pronouncing syllables, and if it's differently pronounced there are different accents on the vowel. It's only English that makes it so difficult to properly pronounce words.

I'd imagine tonal languages like Chinese are much worse for that than English
