NFL 2014

Ah well that's based more on some imperceptive reputation. The kid only has 3 fumbles. Coughlin blows up and the fans and media overreact. Truth is he wasn't blocking well and didn't have the game and playbook down. And he was out most of the year so we really don't know what the kid is about. If he stays healthy I think he'll be fine though.

So this story is in the news again. Remember the one about how the league docked the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins salary-cap money in the 2012 and 2013 offseasons because the other owners didn't like the way Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder structured contracts during the supposedly uncapped 2010 season?

Yeah, it's back. While it's difficult to imagine it advancing very far, there remains a chance it could get embarrassing for the league's owners before it's all said and done. They're wrong on this and always have been. Either there were secret spending rules in place in 2010 despite the lack of a salary cap, or the Cowboys and the Redskins didn't break any rules. One of those things, by definition, has to be true. Although the NFL Players Association likely can't win a court case on this, it might have a chance to expose the owners as sneaky hypocrites. Which might, in their eyes, be worth the effort.

It's hard to imagine the Cowboys defense being any worse than it was last year... but I think it's even worse.

I know that's a common sentiment in the commentosphere, but I don't know how that is really justified (yet anyway).

Dallas lost starters before the season last year, and throughout the year, and was implementing a new scheme. Last year it was Crawford instead of Lawrence. Then guys were dropping left and right, and by December Dallas was starting guys who shouldn't have been on a practice squad. The future would be hardpressed to repeat that past.

Crawford is better than Lawrence currently, and healthy. The scheme is no longer new. Guys who were not fit last year are more bulked/trimmed down as needed (Bruce Carter, Mo Claiborne for instance). Marinelli is now leading the D, and he isn't going to be stubborn/stupid and put expensive man corners in zone all the time.

Everyone keeps making a big damn deal out of letting Ware and Hatcher go but I think that is ridiculous. Ware has been as injury prone as Lee in the last couple of years, and is much older, and his production has dwindled. Hatcher had one really good year, last year, in the 4-3 scheme, and suddenly he is irreplaceable?

Melton was added, and did more in the scheme than Hatcher prior to tearing his ACL. Everyone is acting like the ACL makes him a big ?mark - even after guys like AP play even better after recovery. Even Selvie, a guy coming off the couch last year, got more sacks than Ware. Those 17 sacks are replaceable.

At least they have a $100 Million dollar Left Tackle now.

How's Lee coming along?

Tyron Smith is one of the best picks in the Jones Era, and the signature pick of the Garrett era. At this point it's appears to be the first mega contract from Jones that isn't going to a Triplet or Deion that has zero downside.

Lee should be ready for next season?

Man, seriously, fuck Goodell, and fuck the NFL. Their hypocrisy is so apparent that I won't waste time spelling it out. Other people have done it quite well. The Rice punishment is bullshit, the Gordon punishment is bullshit, the Redskins is bullshit, and the exploitation of the players is bullshit. I think there's massive negative public consensus on these issues, but Goodell and the owners don't give a fuck.

Also, fuck me for still being excited for the season and watching all the Bears games. I may actually decide to watch fewer national games. I hate the NFL as a management group, but I'm not strong enough to boycott their product over their decisions, and neither is anyone else. It sucks.

The punishments are bullshit, but unless you are talking about the ongoing concussion issue, lol at exploitation and the Redskins. And fuck "public consensus". Public consensus in a large chunk of Africa is that female genital mutilation is superduper. Go public consensus.

I would argue that there's a big difference between legal and civil rights issues and a company responding to customers requests. In the later case, there's more reason to yield to public consensus. That said, the NFL doesn't really need to listen to its fans, because they're gonna watch the games regardless.

Problems with public consensus as meaningful aside, there isn't even a public consensus against the Redskins name. In fact, the public is mostly apathetic, and I dare say the vocal extreme minority making an issue out of this weren't even Redskin and/or NFL fans.

Edit: @Jimmy - You guys have Jennings, he's probably at least as good as Bradshaw ever was.

So are you saying you think that "Redskins" is an acceptable team name? It's obviously a racial slur.

Only if the direct parties involved (a person being designated a "Redskin" in a derogatory fashion, and the speaker doing the designating) think it is. That is how slurs work. There is nothing inherently unacceptable about the term "Redskin", anymore so than any other arrangement of letters.

The Navajo in my family find the whole fuss fucking stupid, and they are Cowboys fans.
