The mics I used: Shure Sm 57, Sennheiser e606 (the cheaper one), Oktava MK-219

Maybe I use the Sennheiser in combination with an SM57 in the future but on itself it just doesn't work. Maybe it's me or the room but I always got a hollow sound.
The Oktava just didn't blend well with the other mics, it sounded like shit every time I tried.

I don't think it's really that people are going for the same tone - They're just going with a setup they know will work.

If I had the money to spend on some better mics, I definitely would, but the SM-57 is the tried and trusted mic for recording guitars, and it's cheap. The Mesa cabs, in the US at least, are pretty common to find on the used market and thus can be picked up for a price that nothing else can really touch.

That being said, I no longer have my Mesa cab, because after hearing an Emperor, the Mesa sounded like shit, so I had to buy one :p

Í Only have 2 SM57s but I fuckin love to use them with an ENGL Powerball with an ENGL cab...

I gotta call bullshit here about the Mesa cabs. They aren't so highly regarded just because they're cheap used here. They're used because they sound better for metal than just about anything. I honestly think your Emperor cab wouldn't even be close to as good as the Mesa for recording purposes.

I've had tons of more expensive, "better than Mesa" cabs..... Bogner, Mills Acoustics, Orange, etc. and none of them sounded as good as the Mesa OS 4x12 for any type of modern metal (metalcore, tech death, melodeath, etc.)... I was never truly satisfied with the guitar tones I was getting until I listened to the smart people on this forum and got myself a Mesa.

Those Mesa V30s really make a bigger difference than people think they do. The mids just sit PERFECTLY with the Mesa, where as other cabs sound muffled, dull, and/or too middy when miked up. Like an idiot, I tried tons of high end up cabs over the years, because I saw hype about them on other forums like sevenstring.org and harmony central........ but they just don't deliver like the Mesa cabs. It's not just a coincidence that Andy Sneap, Jason Suecoff, James Murphy, etc. are all using the Mesa cabs...

I tried an audix D4 on a 6505/measa2x12 the other week and I was suprised how good it sounded. Will experiment and post more later!

I like how the Oktava sounds on his own actually (in your clip i mean) :)

Its a head custom made in Germany. High Quality brutal fucking beast. Lasse´s Clips containing it are always awesome..... i still have to figure out how to achieve the best tone here in my apartment.

Regards

Thanks, but it was a pain to get a decent sound. IMO the mic empasizes the high end a little bit too much, so I had to move it to the edge of the cone. Should have tried some off-axis combinations but time is short ;)

Ninnyhammer here. This is my attempt:

roadster and recabinet

DIs > radial X-amp > OD808 > Mesa Roadster (Ch 3 vintage) > Recabinet 3 (Greenback simulation, i5 mic) > Eq (Curve Eq)

I put the amp into the Aracom attenuator acting as a dummy load. Still trying to come to grips with Eq in general and learning how to use Curve EQ though...

i feel like it is a bit undergained (maybe a DI track out gain or a x-amp gain knob issue ?), and i'm more of a "low gain" kind of person usually :)

Yeah, I don't know. The gain knob on the amp is at 1:00, and when I play stuff with my guitar (Duncan JB) it sounds like there is PLENTY of gain (using 2x12 Roadster cab). I have my OD808 set for Overdrive Min, Balance Max, Tone 3:00. I just set the X-amp to match the room volume that my guitar produces, maybe that is a mistake. Perhaps I'll try again and boost the DI interface out and turn the X-amp gain down.
