Not that covers are ever that good, but...

Opeth won't ever put covers on their album (except as bonus material, as they have said recently, and they actually have recorded a cover while recording GR). as we all know :p but for those few, I'd like to point this out again.

but actually, I'd prefer classics, like they did with Remember Tomorrow and Circle of the Tyrants ... I wouldn't mind something from King Diamond, or even old Black Sabbath ...
as a tribute to those bands that inspired them so much, and also to hear another approach to classic material.
the thing with "unexpected" covers is mostly that they are songs that really don't fit in with the sort of songwriting they are used to, and this you can always hear very well, no matter how much they alter it ... I'm not a fan of covering songs that are totally different to be honest.

Hmmm... I see what you mean. I wouldn't want Opeth to be known for covering some random song (like my Police suggestion). I don't even really like their exisitng bonus tracks all that much. But I still think it would be interesting to hear, like, once. You know what I mean? Unless it surprisingly kicked ass, one listen would be enough. Just to hear what potential they heard in the song. Maybe it's not worth the effort, though.

An ill-advised "unexpected" cover: CoB's "Oops I did it again". Not that I'm a huge CoB fan, but, why do that song? I mean. it's not even funny...

Another suggestion: Any song by Nick Drake....

Oops I did it again is pretty much a straight cover too, aside from a little bit in the middle and a solo or something! You'd expect them to do it mockingly, but their keyboardist seems to rather like her music!

I'd like to hear Opeth cover a song originaly done with a female vocalists. Kate Bush and Tori Amos are stand-out candidates here. Maybe even one of the more up-lifting Alanis Morisette songs perhaps?
I'm getting a mental image of Opeth doing "Wuthering Heights". :D

As others have said, if you're going to do a cover, you should do something completely unexpected. Either that or kick the origional's arse.

but something unexpected in the sense of some pop song only delivers something shallow that's made in 5 minutes simply for fun, wich you listen to once and smile about it, but wich sounds stupid for the rest of the time ... a waste of effort and money.

Yes. I agree. Stay away from pop. I don't mean surprising in that they'd cover crap music. Cover good music, but from an unexpected genre.

Another idea: "Dear God" by XTC. Good opportunities for clean/death vox alternations. A very dark song. I can even imagine some Opeth guitars on it.

I've always wanted to hear a deathmetal band do a cover of Master of Puppets... I think Opeth could do some cool things with this rather long song... I'd also love to hear them cover any Emperor song... now that they've got Per and all...

It took me reading these whole 2 pages to realise you're talking about covering songs, not album art. erk

Okay, so I just read that they covered Deep Purple's "Soldier of Fortune" at the BBC for a later release. Not familiar with that track...anyone else know it?

Not the best DP ever did, not at all. As a matter of fact, I find it quite unlistenable =) not as bad as calling an album BANANAS and claiming to sound even heavier now (Dont get me wrong, I Love my DP).

As to the covers. Bathory- The Lake. This is like one of my most beloved songs ever, but it has rubbish production. Could lose some of it's charm if done properly tho.

^ as in Cat Stevens? I love that song. I love Cat Stevens.

This is also a great song. I could imagine an Opeth rendition.
