Official 2011 NON-Metal Thread - Hipsters Unite

i suspect this thread will have a lot of bands with "The" as the first word in their band name.

Actually, these days the reverse is cool: dropping the "the" (see: Fleet Foxes, Emeralds, Liars, Wavves, etc.)

Should I listen to any of those bands? I did download Animal Collective's Sung Tongs and Campfire Songs and have been intrigued so far, though not exactly DYING to listen to them repeatedly.

Emeralds are a fucking incredible... uh... ambient band? Noise band? Electronic band? With a lot of shit going on in their sound. One of my favorite albums from last year....

Fleet Foxes = folk rock a la CSN, sorta, with a shit-ton of harmonies, but a bit darker at times. Doomcifer hates them.

Liars are one of the best and most bizarre bands around today. Some heavy, real, dark shit. It's hard to describe their sound, because it shifts from album to album. This is the opening track from my #4 album of the last decade--Drum's Not Dead.

Wavves are a kickass stoner punk band that I doubt many people here would appreciate.

As far as AC goes, it's tough to say. They're one of those bands that takes a while to sink in. I loved them when I first heard them 6 years ago (there are probably some RC posts), then HATED them for the next 4 years after that (the hipster factor). The rest of their albums are vastly different. If I were you'd I'd check out their (almost album length) EP from 09, Fall Be Kind, or Merriweather Post Pavilion from the same year (their "pop" album). If you want to go in the weird direction, go with older albums like Here Comes The Indian or Hollinndagain. Also, Noah Lennox (aka Panda Bear) released maybe the best album in the entire AC canon, Person Pitch, probably one the WEIRDEST things ever recorded. Check that out, for sure.

Also, considering I love Neutral Milk Hotel, what do you know about other Elephant 6 stuff?

Thanks Justin! I might hate half of this stuff but I'll try it!

Aeroplane is probably one of my top 10 albums of all time. Anne Frank ghost-eroticism FTW.

Olivia Tremor Control also released a gaymazing album, Dusk At Cubist Castle, which is full of sunny Beach Boys chamber-pop and psychedelic ambient weirdness. Also check out their second album, which is even more sonically dense with noises and such.

Of Montreal are also good, but he/they have a shit-ton of albums and styles. I haven't heard enough to comment, really.

Apples In Stereo suck. Gay as hell. Don't bother.

Night Mare: yeah, some people loved it. It definitely has a handful of dope songs ("Sprawl II" might be the best thing they've ever done), but in my mind the album should have been shorter by about 15 minutes. Just goes on and on and on and on....

God DAMN the new Panda Bear's gonna kick fucking ass

cool video ... but one day you will look back at this musical period of your life and laugh .... really hard. :loco:

I've been listening to that French band Phoenix in the car recently. I'm also waiting for the new Passion Pit album to come out in the spring.

I'm trying to convince myself that my taste in music hasn't gone to shit. I'm just too busy to sit down and concentrate on anything more worthwhile. Recently I mostly just listen to music in the car in 3-15 minute intervals. I kind of miss haven't a longer commute.
