[Un]Official 2011 Metal Thread

I think the master question here is when will "fans" realize

okay yeah i guess

people have been conditioned to think that this is what music sounds like and i guess it's initially hard to go back to something that is organic and seemingly imperfect.

but there is a backlash happening for sure, even people with no technical knowledge start to realize that there's something wrong with the way music sounds these days. overcompression, autotuning, sample replacing, programming, quantization, protools cutting and pasting -- it all ends up making today's music, even the stuff that's SUPPOSED to be dirty and mean, sound really sterile, fatiguing and plasticky and it is easily noticable even if you don't know about the processes that makes this disease happen -- once you're exposed to the alternative, anyway

and i think the kids today are LEARNING that this is the case, because while they can't really put their finger on WHY it sounds wrong, they find led zeppelin or iron maiden or whatever on spotify and they're like "hey, this actually sounds good, why do modern records not sound good when our technology is so much better?"

I dont know much about this stuff....but I was wondering if some of this has to do with the lack of skill of the musicians? Maybe without all the techno-wizardry, they'd sound even worse? *shrugs* just a thought

undoubtedly a lot more poor technique passes muster these days because you can fix a lot of stuff afterwards

it used to be that you had to be a pretty good musician to record a good full-length

when it comes to established bands and competent artists like john arch or riot, though, it's just done out of a misguided conception that it's "supposed" to be that way

RIOT members are just old. they might need it.

but where do you hear this stuff Erik in that song? I only recognize that stuff when used for vocals.

it is the vocals i was referring to. it's on the whole vocal track, very noticable imo. (for instance: listen to the words "all that remains" at 0:42 in the riot song, fucking ridiculous)

same to doomcifer, i don't know what to tell you except i hear it, and if you don't you should be thankful

EDIT: actually i will make an attempt to show what i mean

computer musik: 1:13 to 1:16 ("martyr they endear thee") is one of the worst in this particular song, which is still the only one i've heard. also 2:47 on, the harmonies. he fucking holds out the notes steady like an oscilloscope, this doesn't really happen IRL unless you're the best singer (and if you were you would probably make an effort to not come across as an android)
