ok Urban..... who are your fave bands/artists

Lol, and you have to give me a full report on that show Bryant as my broke butt can't get over to see it. ;} :}

You know, I never thought of Howe's voice like that but I can hear it...
:}

Lets see shall we run through metal vocalists through the ages and their qualities here, that might be fun? :}

(Waiting to see what everyone thinks before I begin)

Ha ha ha, Ok Flo....... Urban doesn't sound like anyone else. As I said, it is just a starting point and I am trying to think of vocalists Americans know. Urban has more melody in his voice than Howe does, but he has more "command" in his voice than Martin. He loses a bit of the emotics (emotion) with his power, but not a great amount.
Howe sounds like a drill seargent commanding troups to kick your ass. Martin has that great raspy emotic voice and presence, but doesn't quite "take over" when he needs to. The combination of the two is similar to me how Urban sounds, but hey, Urban is a vocal giant. When vocalists reach his level, they are in a league of few.

Urban don't get a big head !! You (and the rest of the band) still have to deal with jet lag and kick my ass at Prog Power V.

I always enjoy these vocalist(s) conversations, being a huge vocals fan myself. Maybe that's because I can't sing ahah?

Anyway my favorite bands are often those featuring my favorite vocalists, I wonder whether it's the same for Urban.

I don't think any of the Martin Sabbath albums quite compare with either H&H or TMR
Well, those are classics so it's not really fair, is it? :Spin:

Bryant said:
BUT you named a good release and Cross Purposes and Headless Cross are also solid releases. Martin was with Sabbath for many years and should get more credit than he does.
Ah, so in essence, we agree.

Bad Urban !! You love yourself as much as I love me. I can tell that from your liner notes
Heh, too right...

Bryant said:
I could say you sing like Britney Spears if that is your preference. Ha ha ha
It's been done already. A very close friend and former neighbour keeps telling me I sound more and more like Britney with every release and every new song. So go on, hit me! :D

Hey..... don't take me seriously Urban and all posters.
I take you seriously, ...when I'm supposed to.

yeees, Bob Catley is a great vocalist :headbang:
Magnum are almost Metal to me by the way :)
I might agree with Hard Rock. ...hmmm, yes, I'd say 'Kingdom of Madess' is Hard Rock close to Metal but not quite. Hmmm, better not go there, forget I said anything... :)

Fangface said:
There's another singer who maybe was an influence or an inspiration for you : Zak Stevens from Savatage?
Not really, for some strange reason I never heard any release with Zak until after people told me we sounded alike.

Well as a guitarist of over twenty years and someone who can play bass, drums, and a little keys, vocalists fascinate me the most. I can sing reasonably high falsetto and I can sing in key and even understand enough music to sing harmony in different keys, but I simply don't have a nice voice. My natural voice is between bass and baritone and I sound great singing some Southern rock and stuff, but metal just doesn't work for me. I am a shit singer for metal so I am always jealous of good vocalists.

I was fairly serious in that part of the post. You don't allow your occupation to affect your personailty much. It's cool to talk with Tad Morose's lead vocalist because I am a fan, but it's more cool that you don't mask who you are due to your occupation. Since I did my ass-kissing reply, now you can post your real name. I am sure your parents didn't name you Urban Breed. :tickled:

My feelings on what some metal singers sound like (feel free to join in, add your comments, and any singers you feel I left out) 8v)

Zak Stevens: Has a kind of soulful, moody sound and a warm liquid like quality as well.

Dio: Has a slightly rough, heartfelt, quick and angry sound. I'd say that he has an "ordering the troops" sound to his voice, much like Bryant said Howe has.

Jon Oliva: The best of the Savatage singers so far, I can't speak for Damond yet as I am still waiting on their finishing the next album, lol. He has a "straight out of hell" rapid fire style to his singing and an eerie quality to his voice that I just love. Am I making sense when I say his voice feels brutally honest to me?

D.C. Cooper: D.C. has a piercing clarity and a feeling of forcefully grasping at anything left to you in life... The general impression I get is a fantasy book hero, fighting the enemy.

John Arch: His slightly crunchy, agonizing voice flies through the night, simulatneous evoking feelings of pain and freedom. The picture his voice paints for me is of a mystic man, one who has more information on the universe and how it works then can possibly be pleasant.

Theres a few, I gotta run for now. :<) Catch you all later! :<)

Well though I used Howe's vocals as a "commanding the troops" style, Udo is the master of that style, though I think Accept's style plays into that as well.

Andy Kuntz - (Vanden Plas) there lies a modern day swooner. Andy sn't doesn't possess that God given vocal talent or power, but he well makes up for it with control and emotion. At 41 years old, he continues to improve in his vocal skills where many his age decline.

John K. - He often delivers a very Geoff Tate-ish style on the new Balance of Power CD, but he offers much more than a Tate style in his vocals. Technically, he is incredible, but relying so much on his technical prowess somehow takes away from the emotics.

Chitral Somapala (Chity Lanka) - Avalon/Firewind. Chitral was born and raised in Sri Lanka. That gives him a unique accent in his vocals, but it works very well for him. Great emotics and great at clean vocals and also with a little rasp.

Joe Lynn Turner - this guy made everyone he played for sound "soft" but he did it with style. This guy is the male version of Sade. Silky smooth voice that can put one into an almost trance-like state. Yngwie should beat himself in the head for letting this guy go. Yngwie's "Oddyssee" album was a bit commercial, but it was the best non-instrumental work he ever did by leaps and bounds. Those two (Malmsteen/Turner) could have been amazing together.

My english vocabulary is way too limited to describe some of my favorite singers, however I agree with you folks, on almost everything.

Yeah almost, as John K's voice can be very emotional in Biomechanical ;)

You wouldn't believe it if I told you so, no, I'll pass :)

Doh !!! I was trying to look up a recent setlist from TM and came upon some guy mentioning your real name is Urban Breed. Ha ha ha your parents definitely had some form of show business in mind for you from the start huh ?

Well you can just name your favorites.

I am the same way about vocals and liking the band. If the singer sucks, I don't normally like the band. There are some minor exceptions though. I can tolerate some Ozzy stuff and I don't like his voice. Also on many White Lion songs Mike Tramp gets on my nerves, but good God, Vito Bratta was a guitar machine. I hate to say it, but some Rush stuff falls into that category too. Most of the time I like Geddy, but he can get pretty shrill and annoying on some songs.

Here we go :loco:

Ronnie James Dio : the most emotional voice I can think of. After all, he's The Voice of Metal!

Rob Halford : he has (had) it all, emotics, power, control, range, unbelievable high notes, killer phrasing... too bad he lost some of it... but he's still the Metal God.

Carl Albert (Vicious Rumors, RIP) : IMO the most underrated Metal singer ever! He had so much power and soul in his voice, one of my top 5 singers. Easily recognizable, and how many vocalists can sing like both Geoff Tate and Blitz (Overkill) ? Only one, Mr Carl Albert.

Christian "Zouille" Augustin (Sortilège) : maybe the most technical singer I know, truly impressive, with a great sense of melody. Think the perfect mix of Halford, Dickinson and Tate. Too bad he's been retired from the Metal world for 15 years... On a side note, he was the favorite singer of Chuck Shuldiner!

Eric Adams (Manowar) : pounding like a hammer or deep and emotional, he is THE Epic voice! His vocals on "Gates of Valhalla" (and many more) always give me the chills...

Geoff Tate (Queensrÿche) : the master as far as melody and vocal lines go, the perfect example of how to use an incredible technical prowess. Too bad he's not the singer he used to be anymore...

Harry Conklin (Jag Panzer) : probably the best singer I've ever seen live, he is amazing in terms of power and control, everything seems so easy when you see him! He never disapoints and I heard that he doesn't even warm up before shows! o_O

David Byron (Uriah Heep, RIP) : a unique tone, unique melodies... well, he's unique, that's it.

Warrel Dane (Sanctuary / Nevermore) : his voice has changed a lot since the Sanctuary days but I love both era : the stratosphere screams of Sanctuary (how did he do that??) and the dark and emotional delivery of Nevermore.

David Defeis (Virgin Steele) : his voice is like a guitar, it can be sharp like a monster riff, and beautiful like an eerie solo... a pure vocal genius.

Midnight (Crimson Glory) : a threatening voice, vicious and majestuous, dark and sharp, thin and melodic, I cannot think of any other singer like him. Killer high notes too.

King Diamond : the King! What else to say? Love him or hate him but there's noone like the King.

Bruce Dickinson : it was about time I mentionned the Air Red Siren ;) Still in very good shape after years and years of singing, Bruce always delivers the goods.

Ian Gillan : "Child in Time". "When a Blind Man Cries". "Highway Star". Any questions?

Ray Alder (Fates Warning) : I don't know the english words I need to describe his voice, but he's always in perfect tune, singing with class, not so powerful but so well done. His voice is a jewel.

Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray) : not as technical as singers above, still skilled though, gifted for emotics and creating vocal harmonies. I also love when his voice becomes a razorblade! Even in the early Helloween days ;)

Rob Rock (ex-Axel Rudi Pell, Impelliteri) : a classic mid-range voice with (huge) balls!

Dirk Thurisch (Angel Dust) : he's all about emotion and tone, this guy is so underrated.

Jon Oliva (Savatage) : iiin the haaaall, of the mountaaaaaiiiiiiin kiiiiiiiing................ did I forget "Believe"? "Gutter Ballet"?

Zak Stevens (Savatage) : his vocal delivery is often a bit "slow", I don't know how to describe it but it works so well, so deep and passionate.

Andy B. Franck (Brainstorm) : his vocal work on Ambiguity was incredible, he could do everything! Always powerful too.

DC Cooper (Silent Force) : he's like a mini Geoff Tate crossed with David Byron, such a great lyric style with class!

John Cyriis (ex-Agent Steel) : the siren from hell... or from the outerspace, fits better with the band heh... an ear-piercing razor voice, it's quite particular and that's why I love it!

Mike Howe (Metal Church) : we already talked about him a lot... he rules!

Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear) : may sound like a lot like the early days of Halford.... so what? He's also more lyric than Rob and still has a superb voice after 20 years of screaming (for vengeance). Listen to "Visions of Fate" on the latest album. Or "Silence" on the first Gamma Ray album, that's classic.

Blackie Lawless (WASP) : the kind of guy you can recognize from miles away, incredible tone! I'mm a wiiiiild chiiiiiiild, I waaaaant youuuuuhouuuuouuuuuuu

Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass) : one of a kind once again! epic, lyric, dark, majestuous... Messiah!

Harridon Lee (ex-Scanner) : a smooth voice not so powerful for a speed metal band, but he has such a beautiful and elegant vocal delivery. Anyone heard his version of "Innuendo"?

Tomas Englund (Evergrey) : not technical at all, but fits so well with the music... so emotional and melancholic.

James Rivera (Helstar, Destiny's End, Seven Witches) : he's like a darker Bruce Dickinson, very powerful, with some Halford-esque screams from time to time. He had some weird vocal lines in Helstar, I think that's why many people don't like him. But I do :p

Tony Martin (Black Sabbath) : we already talked about him a lot...

Sean Peck (Cage) : the new Halford! He's different though, even more agressive, with a darker tone, and some awesome lyric vocal parts.

Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Maids) : At first I thought there were 2 singers in Pretty Maids... but no, the guy has 2 voices, one rough and one soft.

Mark Shelton (Manilla Road) : A unique magical nasal voice (and sometimes very rough too), you have to hear it to understand... can be a turn off for many people though.

Chuck Billy (Testament) : one of my favorite thrashers.

Tobias Althammer (Lanfear) : he's unknown but deserves to be a superstar ahah.... between DC Cooper and Geoff Tate, his control blew me away, and more important point, his melodies are always catchy.

Glenn Hugues : how could I forget Glenn? He rules and always will!

Thomas Rettke (Heaven's Gate) : a mix between Dio and Dickinson, a few high notes too, sometimes not that far from Mike Howe or even Urban Breed ;) Underrated.

Blitz (Overkill) : now that's a vicious thrash voice :) Can be emotional too, as he CAN sing ("Soulitude", "Burn You Down to Ashes", "Years of Decay").

Michael Sweet (Stryper) : hehe yes I like him, he sounds like a girl at times but his vibrato is unique! Very gifted for melodies.

Guy Esperanza (Riot) : not lyric or anything, but "punchy" (is it a word?) as f**k! RIP Guy, you will be missed.

Charles Rytkönen (Lefay) : he has a particular tone that I love, a bit raspy, yet so elegant. Another unique voice!

Guy Ritter (ex-Tourniquet) : if Udo would like to sing like King Diamond, his name would be Guy Ritter :) You have to hear it to believe it, one of the most original voices ever. Either you love it or you hate it with passion.

Lizzy Borden (Lizzy Borden) : Kinda agressive and/or rock 'n roll high-pitched voice, with a good control. The frontman kicks ass too!

Roy Khan (Conception) : I know he sings in Kamelot now, but I prefer his voice in Conception, there were less happy melodies, a bit deeper tone...

Bob Mitchell (Attacker) : David Wayne (Metal Church) + Udo + more technical abilities = Bob Mitchell.

Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian) : rough yet melodic, and no other like him, go Hansi!

Valery Kipelov (Aria) : the russian Dickinson? mmm... could be, but no, he's more than that. He's truly incredible as far as feeling goes.

Devin Townsend : well, anybody knows him now, and there's a reason :)

Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween) : remember him shining during the Keepers days? Too bad the only thing he can do now is ranting on Metal...

Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) : now we're talking about soul in a voice, thanks Phil for all the great music you wrote and sung.

Joacim Cans (Hammerfall) : ok he's far from being powerful and I can understand why many people can't stand his vocals, but I like his thin voice, especially on the Warlord reunion album, where he manages to sing in a very epic way.

Andy Muck (Stormwitch) : the spiritual father of Joacim ;) similar type of voice and feeling. Only better?

Tim Owens (Iced Earth) : I knew he was a great singer ("Diamonds and Rust" live version), but when I heard Gettysburg on the last IE album.... OMG, how can someone be that good?? Too bad he's a much better singer than a frontman...

Sven the Axe (Solemnity) : 2 voices in his throat, one vicious and one epic, killer!

Ritchie Krenmaier (Stygma IV) : between Dio and Jon Oliva, another pure emotional and powerful voice... he knows how to express sad emotions very well too.

Nils Patrik Johansson (Wuthering Heights / Astral Doors) : the new Dio!! A bit rougher and he can sing with a clean tone as well, the guy is damn gifted.

Daniel Heiman (Lost Horizon) : agressive, lyric, powerful, elegant... everything I like :)

Robert Lowe (Solitude Aeturnus) : his clean wails sound so etheral... so much passion!

Leather Leone (Chastain) : Last but not least, I had to mention some women ;) She's awesome, soooo agressive and soulful at the same time.

Jutta Weinhold (ex-Zed Yago) : kinda of female version of Rob Rock or Bruce Dickinson, I've always loved her style, her power and lyric abilities.

Urban Breed : who knows him? ;)

OMD, Flo! that is an impressive list!
There are quite a few I agree with, on the other hand some I disagree with......

....but I'm missing my favourite artist there ;)
Andreas Hedlund aka mr V or even Vintersorg - I don't know, so far I just have loved everything he did. I'm aware that his voice is a love/hate thing for a lot of ppl though.

Someone else who knows about Jutta and Zed Yago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:high fives Fangface:

ZED YAGO RULES! By they way they're getting out a new album. :}
